    Topaz HK0 Resto

This will be a really slow build as I want to ride it for a while before I go all out maybe, plus I got to get rid of some other junk first. I gave it a bath yesterday looks a little better I need to really scrub it in some spots. I will be ordering a carb kit and a air cleaner sometime this week. I am pretty sure its been without a cleaner for 20 years or better so I am thinking the carb needs a real good cleaning. The fuel lines will be changed Any part thats supposed to be a color that it not or thats rusty or faded will be media blasted and painted for now and powder coated later. I really can't decide what I want to do with all the chrome since most of it is rusted and pitted. Like I said earlier I want to ride this thing and not worry to much hurting anything I just spent good money on getting rechromed or bought new. Anyway enough of that for now. Here are some pics before the bath I will have to get some after bath one later today. I have posted thesse pics in another thread but I figured I would start one just for the resurrection.

PS One of the knobs that hold the handle bars in place broke off inside the bar itself. I tried to use an ez out but it broke to. So do I have an option besides a drilling it out and using a heli-coil?

These were takin real quick this morning before I had to leave for work. The pics make it look worse than it is for some reason. Its cleaner than it was. I still don't know what I am gonna do about the handle bar.

I managed to remove one rusted knob bolt without damaging the threads. Cleaned it up, tapped it and it was good to go. Just use small bits. Try it, what do you have to lose?

There's a product called PB Blaster, its a super penetrant that stinks pretty bad but works great on rusted fasteners if you let it soak.

I agree to try PB for a few days...Make sure that you get it all around the bolt and I spray really rusted bolts everyday for 3-4 days and let it soak for a few days before trying to loosen...You might have to do that for a week or so, trying each day to loosen a bit and spraying again.

I had a set of bars that I laid upside down after removing the top clamp from the bike...That helped a lot to keep the PB in there I think...

If you can notch the bolt and use a tool called "grab it"... I have had very good success with that.

The chrome might clean up well enough for a rider if you use WD40 and 000 steel wool.

    Good Luck.

I was able to free up a knob on my KO with PB blaster also. Like Karen said, spray it for two or three days and give it a try, if all else fails just tap it out or buy a new/used knob top set.
How far of a restoration are you going to do on this HKO? Looks like a pretty solid starter bike for sure. Does it run?

It does not run just yet I think it just needs a carb rebuild. It has good spark and compression, still have not got a tester on it yet. Now about the handle bars, what about just replacing the handlebar holder nut........ I just found out you can buy those, but how do you go about getting them out?
    Thanks

The nuts just unscrew but that's not going to do any good since the black knobs thread into the bars.

[Unless you can get that broken piece of the "ez-out" from the handle bar you have a problem. That ez-out is made of harded tool steel and you will not be able to drill it out. It'll just burn up your drill bits trying.
