st90 skybongo

Hello all. I’m new to the page so if this question was asked and you guys know of other discussions about it please point me in the right direction. I’m doing a rally in Peru called the monkey run https://www.theadventurists.com/ in September. The “bikes” that we are riding from atalaya to Ayacucho, some 550 or so odd miles are the mighty ST90-8A SKYBONGO 90cc... to make this challange even more fun, I have next to no mechanical experience. I’m looking for any info that anyone has on there bikes. Manuals, websites, etc. I would also like to get a hold of one that is beat down in hopes to get it rideable before sept so I have a working knowledge of this iron pig! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also accepting thoughts and prayers

The ST90 bikes we deal with around here are not that particular ST90. Around here, the last ST90 that Honda produced rolled off the line in 1975. Yours is a different, very modern bike and not Honda as far as I can tell.

Thanks rick. I’m not sure what they are exactly. I just know that that’s what they said we are given. Regardless. If I wanted to learn about one something like the st 90, what would I want to try to buy?

The closest modern Honda to what would compare to the modern, other-brand ST90 you are interested in would, in my opinion, be the Honda Grom. Its a 125 CC, fuel injected bike that is a blast to drive. I don't own one but they will easily reach 60 MPH, even more with somebody that weighs less - I'm about 185 pounds.

That looks like a gorilla clone to me .

This Skybongo piqued my curiosity so I tried googling it but didn't have many results.
There's a Belgium outfit called Skyteam, http://www.skyteammotor.com that makes a Skybongo ST50-8A but no ST90.
They also have a model called Skymax that has a frame that's a dead ringer of a CT70 in 50cc & 125cc EFI that looks really cool.
It's hard to tell what engine they're using other than it's a Honda clone.

You might find more information on one of the Euro websites.

BTW....after reading about The Monkey Run, I'm wondering if you have masochistic tendencies? I mean, 550 miles through the Andes Mountains and rain forest, ON A MINIBIKE? Just kidding...I'm kind of jealous.

As we always say: "If nothing's gone wrong, then everything has gone wrong"

That being said, there are a few things you can do to ensure slightly less things go wrong..

The bikes tend to go shitty on us when they're over ridden. Bear in mind these bikes are not built for the purpose we are using them for. Make sure you stop every few hours, especially if it's really hot.

A lot of the problems you'll have involves things shaking loose. Get into the habit of tightening all the bolts regularly.

Hahaha. Well I’ve done their rickshaw run in India with them so you may be right about being a masochist! But all in the name of a good time. I did some searching too with not much luck. The organizers said that the skybongos are the bikes they use and I wouldn’t be surprised if they found the most obscure bikes possible for the run. I mean, what a set up. You buy bikes with no possibility of finding parts. Rent them to mad men and women until they are beat to death. Then the poor sap in the saddle breaks down in the middle of the rain forest and has to trade the thing for a ride to the nearest village. In the end the organization gets to keep the deposit. It’s the perfect investment! Haha. Anyway. Thanks for the leads. I’ll post here when I find some info.

That’s one of them Bruce. Included in the cost of the rally is the bike. I don’t have one, yet. My thing is I want to get some experience w general maintenance before I get there. Have a very basic set of tools with me and maybe an important part or two. When u say clone.is that just a knock off of another more mainstream bike? And any ide what kind of motor I’m looking at? It doesn’t have to be the exact bike.i just want to be able to break down a problem and get her runnin again.

FWIW....a little more digging turned up the motors are definitely Chinese. Made by Jialing I think.
A lot of dealers in Europe sell them.
There's a few guys over at Planetminis.com that know about them.
