1984 CT70 Build - TB108,12v and a shipment from Webike...

There is some truth in that. Fact is, they all share the same dna. The most noticed changes were cosmetic. What escaped notice were the mechanical improvements. The '80s era bikes had some good upgrades...they were essentially the same as the '90s versions, but lacking 12v CDI.

Once a bike is customized, model year matters less...except for regulatory requirements, i.e. insurance & required lighting.

Part of the goal in this build is to restore the "look" of the original bike (to the untrained eye) and to give it a little more character. Since it was a stripped down bike to begin with it worked out well that nothing would be ruined or wasted. More or less building it up. For me the biggest highlight of this model is the front fork.

The forks improved hugely beginning with the K1 model, the `80 & later version went purely conventional (as opposed to CT70-only), taking things a step further in a good direction. 1980 was also the first to get the improved seat and it's way better than any of the prior designs...from a comfort & durability standpoint.

With so many parted-out-and-left-for-dead bikes extant, there's plenty of raw material to build whatever you want. Taking a bike that's too far gone for a full-on restoration and putting back into service, especially when that extends the capabilities of the machine, is a win-win. There are some highly creative owners out there and they keep things interesting.

Sorry guys for the delay. I made a bunch of progress but I am unable to upload pictures to the site. I will try to find another option in the meantime.

Are you trying to upload pics from a laptop, or from a smartphone??

I'm trying to upload from a desktop. I tried both options to upload and even tried to make a folder under my username to upload with no luck. Also cleared my browser's cache and logged out with no luck.

Huh. Are you using the button that looks like a landscape...mountains and sun, in a box, button? Maybe we should get the admin to help..?
Tiegden.
Are you getting a error popup notification, or what does it do/say when you try?

Thanks for the quick reply and trying to help out. I tried the post reply option using the Upload a File button, the More Options button and used the Upload a File button, clicked and dragged and finally tried the uploaded Media button but could not upload photos to my personal media folder.

It is strange since everything worked so well at first.

The message was a pop up stating Error Uploading #### image.

I am going to try linking the images from a hosting site. One extra step but if it works.

Hopefully this will work.....

Here are a couple of shots of the TB race head that I was unable to upload earlier. It is impressive in it's construction and finish. Valves, intake and exhaust ports are just a little bigger....

Please let me know if this doesn't work.

I was missing the original harness, controls and lights on my CT. I sourced this one from the 1986 that I sold with the 140. To top things off it even came with a key.

Most of the switches were seized up and the "Hi/Lo" switch was broken off. Fortunately I had another complete left side control from another parts bike. Everything was disassembled, cleaned, lubed, painted and polished up.

The speedometer was working but sticking. I noticed that the mounting screws were bent inward and the input for the cable was at an angle. Given the headlight had a nice square dent at the top and the headlight bracket was twisted every which way, I guessed that it took an impact too.

After some searching on the site I decided to tackle it. Started with a small flat head screw driver to pry the bezel back then a paint can opener to gently work it the whole way around. I was able to pull it apart and see the clutch was crooked causing enough drag that the clock spring couldn't return the spring. I set it in a vise and gently pried it straight. Reassembled, painted and tested.

The final pic was something that came later during the install of the harness. I discovered that with led signal lights the original turn signal indicator would not work and the bulb was actually turning into a circuit causing all four lights to blink. After more searching and a trip to the auto parts store I sourced two diodes and set them up inline in a "Y" to the original left and right connectors. Both are wired in to one wire leading to the dash light while the other is grounded.

Now it works like it should.

As mentioned earlier the headlight and bracket took a hard hit. The headlight ears were also in rough shape. The headlight was almost returned to "normal" with some gentle persuasion and a ball peen hammer. Enough that I skipped filler. The headlight ring seemed to be salvageable and the chrome was in decent shape until I noticed some pitting which lead to chrome pealing off. I decided to scuff it up as much as I could and paint it to match.

As for the bracket, every piece of it seemed to be going in a different direction.
I was able to straighten it to the point where the headlight was pointing forward and level, however, it is no where near perfect. I was able to finish off the ears with a bit of filler and sanding.

Final touch was a new 12v 4 1/2" headlight from Drag Specialties. It uses a H3 bulb and seems to work well. Only issue is that it is sold as a driving light and only has one beam. Bright side it is DOT approved.....

Last update for now....

Please keep in mind that I am working out of a small shop with basic tools.

I was able to salvage a full front and rear fender from the '86 to replace both bobbed fenders on my '84. The front fender needed sanding and primer to get it smooth while the rear had a couple of dents and cracks to fill. After mustiple coats of Duplicolor burnt copper and clear they were ready to go. I still need to buff them smooth.

From the Webike order I had a small simple grab bar, but, I wanted to have something were I could attach my Wolfman bag since its previous location on the bars would block the speedo. I ordered a second rack and decided to install it, hoping it would not make the rear too long.

Electrical buttoned up with a Trail Tech 2 wire regulator, new battery tray and new gas tank with trim from Webike.

If all goes well today I will weld up new mounts on the taillight bracket for the smaller taillight at my dad's garage and will get the new aluminum rims installed. Hopefully it will be back on the ground soon.

To upload from a HDD, use the camera icon button.

If you're trying to use hotlinks, from another site, those don't always play nice.
