1971 Ct70 Restoration

Picked up this 71’ ct70 for a full resto. It was in great original condition, but the owner wanted it to be concourse... I couldn’t argue with him on that one.

Had to ride it around a little bit - so I could burn off some gas before the teardown :D... It runs great and shifts really well especially being the 3-speed auto shifter. It’s going to be a sweet bike!

I’m starting this thread a week late, so I’ve already made lots of progress...

The tear down went great - no surprises and it turned out to be one of my quicker ones at around 2 hours.

While the frame and other parts have been at the paint shop, I’ve been painting the silver parts and doing lots of polishing...

As nice as it looked, as-received, it was quite a way past "100% original". Your upholstery & polishing looks beautiful; this should be stunning when complete.

Two important notes, if your goal is a "100-point", concours-correct, restoration. The brake arms, brake stay, fasteners, seat latch, battery carrier, etc must be zinc plated, as they were originally. Silver paint is going to catch the attention of purists and detract from your excellent work. Second, ditch that stupid "lift handle". It is NOT a CT70 part...only ST70s with centerstands got them but those bikes didn't come with the CT70 engine guard. Take a close look at your detail shot (good photo, btw) and note the damage inflicted because of that handle.

It looks like someone glass blasted the head assembly and the engine cases with the screws still in them.

Thank you for letting me know! I looks like someone previously dropped the motor and painted it along with some other parts... That’s what threw me off with the silver paint. I’m replacing all the screws and bolts with the CHP kit. I think I’m going to go back and fix all of the silver parts - it’s not that much work and it’s worth it in the long run. I didn’t know that about the handle, but I’ll ask the owner what he wants. I’m glad I posted it - Thank you guys for the help!

Do yourself a favor and retain all of the original hardware + fasteners. Unless it's got road rash, or significant rust, it can be re-plated and replaced anytime. The hardcore purist crowd likes original bolts.

I think Honda still sells all of those JIS phillip screws.

I was referring to the bolts with correct "8" markings on the heads, as well as the oddball pieces like the oversized hex nuts for the hubs, shoulder bolts for the brakes & kickstand, etc. JIS screws are a non-issue.

I was able to get it put back together today! Just needs a few finishing touches before it’s finished, but it’s looking amazing... I’m really digging this red!

Looks good, not a 100 pointer though. You might want to fix a few things. The K0 did not use the sticker on the chainguard. The cam cover is not painted, tunnel roller and L/S cylinder bolt is not painted black. Missing phenolic spacer for intake/carb. Wrong looking aftermarket CHP rear shocks. Original shocks can be rebuilt by ''scooter'' on here or buy nos oem. Not picking on you but wanted to point out obvious stuff.
