Ol Dirty Bastard

This is a project that I've been talkin about for a good long while. Ol Dirty Bastard CT70 project. I want a good rusty ugly CT, mechanically sound and road worthy, with a big shiny new engine, exhaust, and rear shocks. Maybe recover a seat with my old leather jacket.

I had 2 bikes that I thought would be good candidates. I asked the good folks here at lilHonda for opinions...and settled on the Mighty Green K4.
https://lilhonda.com/index.php?threads/which-bike-will-be-a-better-lookin-beater.22353/

I had always figured to use the toasted gold bike, but the MG won the vote. The toasted gold bike has a new home with detdrbuzzard, and a new handle...Golden Turd.

I bought the Mighty Green beater from a lH member back in 6/14.
https://lilhonda.com/index.php?threads/1975-ct70-k4-project-for-sale.17114/

I bought everything he had from the bike...basically added the carb and speedo to what you see in the link above.
I built my Black and Red/Recycled Cycle out of crappy old parts that weren't worth the time and energy to sell. This bike will be similar...good runnin and ridin bike built out of ratty rusty parts. I like that.

This bike is rusty...all the way to the middle. Couple good dents in the frame. Foot brake pedal is badly bent, and the mounting peg might be too...foot brake spring boss on frame is broke...left shock mount is bent a smidge...swingarm is pretty rough, but I love the patina.
But the frame seems solid, nice vin tag, good steering stop, good engine mounts.

I don't plan to use the stock front fork...at least not the legs or springs.
The plan is to use 80's CT fork legs with the stock...everything else. I think it will work. Only hitch that I expect is that the rubber gators will be empty...no springs inside. I'm hoping they will just stand up in there, keeping the dirt out. I'll have to glue or otherwise fasten the trim rings to the bottom of the headlight ear tubes. But I'm not too sure how this will work out...if it'll rattle, etc. But I plan to do whatever is necessary to make it work. If it don't work, I'll use the stock setup, which, ain't so bad anyway.

Stock... wheels, Trail Wings, and brakes.
Stock bars and controls.
Stock speedo, head and tail lights, turn signals, etc.

What I was planning for the engine, WAS, a 54x54 TRX90 124cc 4up, with a Takegawa manual clutch(cover) but retaining the stock Honda mainshaft mounted clutch. Also using a Takegawa 54mm crank. Trailbikes V2, roller rocker head. Everything polished up nice and shiny.

But I really miss the semi-auto 124cc that was/is in my old DAX.
So the NEW plan, I think, is to build the engine with a AaSa 54mm TRX90 type crank, with the stock TRX90 semi-auto clutch and cover.

All I really plan to do to clean up the stock bike is to clean it, with some WD-40 and a dirty rag...ODB. The D is for dirty! :)

I have 2 of these I'll be doing when we finish up our 71' Z50 project. The 70' HK0 I have has a siezed motor and leaks oil pretty good so may need to do what you are with a different motor, I'll be watching this closely for tips!

This is my jam right here. Love your plan!
Reminds me of Eichkay’s CT70 build....

https://www.planetminis.com/threads/eichkays-150daytona-ct70-k3.165669/page-3

Wish I could find one picture not distorted by photobucket.

Thanks Loopie. I actually thought of you while I was plinking out that first post. I know you always like this sort of thing.
Photobucket SUCKS! The word Photobucket alone sparks distaste every time I hear it now. Then every time I (can't) see a Photobucket pic, that they're holding hostage, I curse them. PHOTOBUCKET, you SUCK!!

OK...anyway, I'll check out Eichkay's thread. I don't think I ever came across that one before.

Not a POS to ME, but...it's rough.

I've taken a bunch of these hydro fork legs apart before. I wanted to show the way I've learned to do it. It works really well.

First I loosen back the pinch bolts on the triple tree.
Then, if there is heavy rust, I slice it off with a razor knife, then scrub the rest off with a worn out scotchbrite.
Then I remove the top sealing bolts and extend the legs fully...replace the bolts.
Then with a length of WOOD, not metal, I put the 2x4 under one side of the triple...holding BOTH, the 2x4 with one hand, and the fork assembly in the other hand, I raise them BOTH then slam the 2x4 down on the cement, focusing on one leg at a time.
The idea is to use the weight of the fork legs to pull itself thru the hole in the triple tree.

It works great, and beats the hell out of beating on the fork leg, or putting chanellocks on them, etc.

Sometimes there is more rust under the springs that will fight you getting the plastic spring bushings off too. If necessary, I use a pipe to get the plastic bushing free'd up and moving, so it can slide off.

Both of my inner legs have putting in the slide area...that's not easily repairable.

Then I remove the sealing bolts and hang the legs to drain out as much oil, and dirt, as possible.

The wheels have old Nitto's on them. I put 15psi in both. The rear tire just started to show a crack...dry rot. The front held it tho. Someone might want that one. I'll try to be careful when I remove it, but damage is almost inevitable.
The rear tube held air, front leaks. The front brake drum looks really good, the rear is looking rough. I'm kinda hoping to use the rims, so I hope the rust inside isn't too terrible.

I'll dump some oil into the top end of the original motor, then drain everything before I box it up for safe keeping.

I love how beat up the swingarm is. But it might be too far gone. I'm gonna try to straighten it out if I'm able. If not, I have another that will work.
I guess my first job now should be to break down the wheels...get everything ready for a day of cleaning. Need to gather some parts, nuts and bolts, quite a few things actually. Maybe need to make a list.

I'm in the market for a Mighty Green chain guard if anybody has one. Bent and rusty is GOOD :--)

If you have a genuine H, with the original engine, well...that's a pretty hot commodity. You'll want to think long and hard before you make any changes away from STOCK.
If you do make changes, it's best to make sure everything is reversible. And keep the matching engine...that BELONGS to the frame.

Leaving it with a “well used appearance” saves a whole lot of time in that department. I like the idea.

Hehe...
I've thought the same thing 10 times over the last couple days. Sometimes, I let out a little giggle. I'm pretty lazy, so...this is MY jam too.
I've been having to consider if I'm even going to CLEAN anything other than bearing journals and...engine guts.
I could build this entire bike without really cleaning anything, then take it to the car wash and blast it as clean as possible with the wand...call it good. Done...ODB.

I've seen the car shows on TV where they "save the patina" but they usually add a little patina, with a air brush or whatever, imitation rust, then they clearcoat over everything...this ain't that. lol
I want real rust. But the question is... do I want real dirt too?? Plays right in to my laziness.

I'm looking at these engine cases and covers...thinking of the plan to polish them all up. Am I going to put the work in to THAT?? Send them off to a pro?? Pays the dollars and dodge the work?

Can you spot the buffer in this pic.

It's been sitting right there for years. Nice and handy, bolted right to a stand. Ready to go, any time I have the urge to polish something up.

If you look closer, it's barely used. Like brand new.

Ya haven't confirmed anything yet, but it sure looks original. When I get through these other 2 projects that one is next. But it is definately froze up and lekas alot of oil so hopefully the case is ok and not cracked.
