Anybody have a trick for the original case gaskets, blue felpro gaskets came off like butter but the original black case gasket it not budging, tried a razor, wd-40 an have it soaking in penetrating oil now.

I have had to resort to using this and a razor blade. But be careful it removes paint too. O'reillys carried it I'm sure others do too. crc.jpg

Guess it speaks for itself lol, I will have to give that a shot tomorrow. I have it soaking in some mineral spirits for the night, see if that can penetrate it any. Amazing the difference in old vs new as far as removing them.

Bottom end is done an didn’t have to purchase a thing everything looks great. now it’s on to the top end which is what previous owner pulled apart, I will have to play pick apart with spare motor as a majority of the top end is missing, I lapped valves an plan to use all the covers, an whichever cylinder is closest to spec. cam chain tensioner is junk so I will need to scan that too but other than that internally it looks good. I am going to rebuild the stator, replace oil seals an exhaust valve seal. Anyone have any suggestions on things I should replace while I have it apart?

The rounded edge of the key should go into the crank...with the flat edge sticking out. Tap it in with a plastic (soft) hammer or screwdriver handle. You could even tilt it slightly so the flywheel goes on easier.
Also make sure there is no burr, or damage to the groove in the flywheel...make sure the key CAN slide into that groove.

Also...slide the flywheel onto the shaft, then spin it around slowly...feeling for the key to drop into the keyway and the flywheel should slide in Then LOOK, with a flashlight to SEE that the key is IN the keyway (groove). Then you're in...torque it...done.

Bottom photo is spare motor which everything so far had been untouched. That key looks very low an flush compared to motor I am rebuilding though.

There IS damage to the groove in the flywheel.
Yes looks like PO could not figure out how to get bolt off an attempted to drill or use homemade tool? I guess I will have to swap crank out with spare motor does it look correct? Key was in flywheel when I disassembled engine.

The one key you have looks homemade. The other key...low flush one...is NFG too.
Swap in the good-er crank, buy a new key, and clean up or replace the flywheel.

I just googled NFG lol, I guess i will be pulling that engine apart again glad I didn’t tighten anything external on case.

Got most of the parts done with first round of polishing. Figure I will shine up everything but the handle bar mount. Also got a seat with a pan in pretty good shape last night just have to keep an eye out for some handle bars, exhaust stinger an a headlight now. Going to try to get the silver paint on engine, rims an tank soon. Also has anyone every found a brass fitting that works for the drain hose on carburetor? I found one off a KTM that looks identical I’m just waiting for some measurements.

Going to take rims, engine covers and tank to paint. Then plan to straighten steering stop out an clean up a weld someone did on the forks lower brace. Anyone have a decent taillight bracket or exhaust stinger they want to part with?
