  • Phillipsville, MI. That you might think it was in the west is understandable, it has that distinctly weathered/overripe look of everyday 19th century architecture. While gold & silver fed the 19th century boom towns of the American west, they weren't the only valuable metals being mined at that time. In the upper midwest, it was copper & iron. Copper country, in northern MI, had it's boom fueled by red metal. What it lacked in value per ounce was more than made up in tonnage...for a few, short, decades. What 19th century mining centers have in common, circa 2014, are ghost towns.
