Could be a `69, more likely a `70 Type 1 general export model. That would explain the mph speedo and lack of Japanese writing on the decals & badges. If you post the VIN, I'll see if I can nail down the year. Is there a VIN tag on the frame and SN stamped into the LH engine case?

Wow, nice one. We've seen a few of those that members have found. That one looks like it may be the best yet.

It is a `69, export model, as we thought. I wouldn't lose any sleep over the non-numbered engine. This isn't the first such example I've seen...I also own two of them. I suspect that this was limited to the early export models. Judging by the heel/tow shifter, your motor has the Dax-specific 1d/2u shift pattern. That's another good sign; the Dax version of the 3-speed engine has a higher hp rating than the CT70, or CT70H.

Looks like you made a nice score, congrats.

Every single Dax in the US was imported by an individual, they were never sold here. Seems like most were brought back by US servicemen.

Don't really know why Honda rated them at 5.6hp. The only examples I've seen with advancing flywheels are JDM 4-speeds...ultra rare in the western hemisphere. That leaves cam, carb, head and piston (higher static CR?) as the logical possibilities. Unfortunately, there's not enough reliable data to check/verify any of this. I'd dismiss the power numbers as :poop:,or differences in rating standards in other countries, except for one thing...STs of this era do seem to top-out about 5mph faster than their CT70 cousins.

They Rip! Trust me! My stock Dax blows the doors (relatively speaking, and since there aren't any doors well you get the drift...) all my friends stock CT's. Shifting past neutral is a bit of a learning curve but once you get the hang of it you're good to go. Get that sucker back into to working order!

The original Honda shop manual does specify a larger main jet for the Dax. All things the same, that does indicate deeper breathing capability. Kinda makes sense, since the ST70 was the road-oriented version of our favorite small bike...sold to older, more experienced, riders. Thus no reason to de-tune the motor.

I think mine runs a 58 main and somewhere in my diggings around for JDM Dax info, i'm remembering it may have had a hotter cam profile too?! Some day, when i save a few G's, i'm sending it to you for a full on Resto! I know how much you love a can of worms!
