Aftermarket Auto Clutch

Just picked up an '81 Passport (pretty much the same ol Honda 70 engine that's in the CT70s, etc) that seems to have some clutch issues. To get it adjusted, I have to back out the screw well past the point of "just touching" - multiple complete turns, in fact. This to get it to shift smoothly and remain in neutral with the pedal depressed. But, once I get to that point, there's some slippage while riding and kickstarting. So, sounds like it's time for some new friction plates at the very least.

My wife just got a scooter, and I'm trying to reinforce her interest in going for rides, so I do not want to have my engine apart longer than necessary. Thus, I'm planning on ordering all the parts before I pull the side cover. New friction disks, springs, lock washer, and cover (
inner and outer) gaskets. I already have the odd 4-prong clutch socket from doing this on a CT70. The problem is that DrATV/Beatrice Cycle is out of stock of half these parts. I'm looking at sourcing them from multiple locations, but by the time I pay multiple shipping fees, the price adds up to just about the same as this:

Honda CT70 C70 Complete Auto Clutch Assembly Brand New | eBay

Honda SS50 CL70 CT70 Complete Clutch Assembly Brand New | eBay

(not sure what the difference is between the two...)

Does anyone have any comments on or experience with the quality of these kits?

Thanks!
Adam

p.s. It's good to have a lil honda again!

Pretty sure one of those is for auto clutch and one is for a manual clutch. The first link you posted is the Semi-auto, and the second link is Manual. It says in the description below the images on the one with the CL70 listed that it's for manual clutch and they didn't produce this bike with a semi-auto engine. The link to the first clutch has the auto clutch pieces included and the other does not... as for the quality of those parts i cannot attest as i never buy parts from ebay sellers. Only Dr.ATV and CHP, i trust them!

Welcome back!

There are 3 types of semi-auto clutch: early 6v, (mostly K0 as I recall), later 6v K1 & later (from memory) and 12v. If yours is the same as an `81 CT70, then you want the later type plates & discs. If you want to rebuild this thing in one shot, then I'd replace both the plates & friction discs. If you need a 3rd reliable source, try NEVC via telephone and they should be able to get your the correct parts for your model/year.

As for aftermarket clutches, not heard much about any of them. From what I have heard, most are the 12v flavor (4 screws in the throwout bearing flange/oil spinner cover) and require a different lever for clearance. When in doubt, ask the vendor...

That's what I'd do. Solving puzzles can take time.

Absolute worst case, a major part is broken. Used semi-auto clutches are a dime a dozen, a ready supply of cheap parts/rebuildable cores. They rarely ever need anything more than plates & discs. Add a new set of springs is a whopping $12, and voila! completely new clutch pack, good to go..
