75' XL70 clutch spring free length

Afternoon all,

I only have a CT70 service manual and this is what I've been using for my XL.

I am putting the engine back together and am inspecting the clutch plates and springs. The CT manual says anything under .122" for the fiber plates and I should replace. I'm well above that so I'm good there. But the free length of the 4 main clutch springs is like .770". The CT manual says anything under .803, replace. I know my XL is a 4spd manual and the CT 3spd auto. Not sure if I'm good here or not.

Thanks

Sid

The "H" 4 speed clutch springs are good down to .748 free length, according to the manual. I also checked a new spring and it measures .792 so I wouldn't worry about your springs on a stock engine, they'll be fine.

According to Clymer's, manual clutch specs wear limit on clutch spring free length for all but an S65 is 1.023". For all manual clutches, friction disc thickness wear limit is .094" and clutch plate & disc warpage wear limit is .02".

Bob, take a look in your manual again, it may be an error or just a mis-read on your part as my old Clymer's manual shows those specs you posted are for the 90cc. The specs I posted above are from a Honda publication and match what my Clymer's shows.

In my Clymer manual, except for the S65 listing of clutch spring free length, there is no mention of any other engine size for manual trans clutches. See below:

I see that manual shows the rest of the 4-speed bikes under the centrifugal clutch table including the OPs XL70 and others without listing the specs. Clymer screwed the pooch on that one I guess.
