CT70 Triple Tree

Can you still buy the triple tree? Mine is ok but since I'm replacing so much of my bike I sorta want a new one. Mine is structurally sound just one side looks like it was laid down at some point.

Post a photo of it.

These vintage castings are of very good quality. Unless the road rash is very deep, it can be metalfinished, then the entire piece polished to show quality. It's a relatively DIY-friendly project, not much money...just elbow grease.

Those are hammer marks, not road rash. Whoever did that "work" must have gone onto great success, forcing square pegs into round holes. :butcher:

Can't really tell how deep those scars go. With those hi-res photos, on my monitor, they're larger than life and look horrible. Might be able to clean up this part but, honestly, I think you're right. A better specimen is needed if the objective is purist-original. Leveling the deformed surfaces is going to visible alter the profile, taking a lot of casting detail with it. Happily, finding a used original that can be restored should be easy and a helluva lot less money than NOS.

Wonder why someone would hammer it. Really odd. There is nothing to hammer there. Used is fine just need to find a nice one if anyone has one.

What's odd is it's a one owner bike and I have serious doubts it was ever apart.

That kind of metal deformation doesn't just occur spontaneously, whilst no one is around. Something harder than aluminum struck the top tree, vigorously & repeatedly. Easy way to figure out if CJ nailed the answer...pull the inner fork leg on the affected (afflicted?) side. If the locating tab, at the top of the spring holder is injured, or missing, voila! mystery solved. A lot of guys try to reassemble the fork with the inner leg either rotated 180 degrees, or with the lower/inner installed 180 degrees out. The locating tab then contacts the fork tree, instead of fitting into the keyhole groove. It's a common mistake, almost as common as installing the carb slide 180 degrees off.

At this late date, it doesn't really matter, does it? The metal is heavily scarred and the best way to correct the problem is to source another tree.

Finding one though is another story.

I really dont think that those are rare...yet. Look for a nice one before you consider this one here.

I have one that I THINK came from a '71K0, but I'm not sure. It might have come from an early Z50. I have a real hard time telling them apart. Can anyone here tell the difference?????

It has a few nicks here and there and is dirty, but I think it will polish up in the right hands. The knob is free spinning.

Looks good to me. If anyone can confirm it is the right one I will work it out with cjpayne. I have my own knobs which is good and could polish it.

That's a CT70 knob...Z50 flavor of that vintage is different and made of hard plastic. Cjpayne is good people, too:25:

The pics actually make it look better than in person.lol.

I should have measured this in the 1st place.

Eye to eye from center is around 3" 5/8ths

Eye to eye from side to side looks like 6" 1/2 dead on.

CJP's top tree will work great for you.
From what I have seen, the early Z50's don't have the additional small cut out as seen on the 4th pic on CJP's original post and have different castings on the bottom side of the tree.

I think Bob was referring to the turn knob itself.

Yes, edited that. A plastic top tree would be crazy!

You are fast, I edited my original post within a minute of posting it. :4: The CT70 plastic knobs have 8 ridges while the early z50 plastic knobs have 4.

After you polish it, it would be great to see some before/after pics. Your high resolution camera is ALOT better than my flip phone camera.lol
