Advice on trans repair

I tore down my second engine today, pretty familiar now with all the bits and pieces. The reason for the rebhild was low compression and a slipping kickstart.

No real surprises until i split the case. First, in the bottom of the pan was a tooth, kickstart pinion gear. Kind of figured that one.

Mainshaft looked rough as well as the big gear on the countershaft. When i pilled that transmission, the bearings came along too!

1. Is the mainshaft supposed to have sharp teeth on it or a flat ridge?
2. Should i just get a new countershaft and not try to pull the bearings? I dont have a three jaw puller.
3. Lower part of rod at crankshaft .0165 on one side, .018 on the other. Should i source a replacement?

Im keeping this motor stock displacement.

Even on this tiny screen, that looks to be one seriously abused tranny. I see damaged gear teeth, that you didn't mention.

No joke...I'd source another 3-speed gearbox, at least the gear cluster assemblies. Just replace the forks and pins...gotta expect those are in equally fine shape, considering TLC this motor has seen. :confused: How are the kickstart shaft splines?

What other gear teeth do you see?

The kickstarter splines are in good shape, so are the shifter splines. I need to measure the shift drum still.
So far my shopping list is:
11t mainshaft
35t gear for C/S.
Pinion gear for kick start.

I don't have access to my desktop computer...the one with a real monitor. Phone screens work better for younger eyes.

You won't find any measurable wear on the shift drum OD. If there were any, you'd see & feel a ridge, at the boundary where fork contact begins/ends. If the drum has any appreciable wear, it'll be in the pin grooves. The pins rotate inside their bores, in the forks...they usually take the brunt of any frictional wear. I'd replace the forks & pins for sure. This is one of the most brutal-appearing transmissions I've seen. And...absolutely DO NOT reuse any of the C-clips. May as well replace any thrust washers (between gears) that can be removed, whilst the C-clips & gears are off.

IMO, you're on the right track to a sound transmission(y).

Now's the time to take a good look at the other 4 gears, under magnification...before clicking the "add to cart" button.

I rolled the dice and picked up a complete transmission off of ebay. Half the cost of replacing one gear and I get the whole assembly.
