Silver Tag Serial Numbers

I am working to restore a Silver Tag CT70. The bike is very complete and has every indication that it has not been touched since it rolled out of the show room. I was surprised to find that the frame and engine serial numbers do not match. The numbers are reasonably close together, and both in the silver tag range, but not matching. Has anyone seen this before?

Actually, that is the norm with our bikes. I'm not sure if Honda matches numbers with ANY of the bikes they build. But with ALL of the lilhondas discussed around here, "numbers matching", means that the numbers are within a certain range. CT70's are typically within about 500.

There is a very early silvertag on eBay right now. Frame/Vin number is 100095, and the seller says the engine is 100022.

So even CT70 number 95, has a motor # that's 73 marks off.

There are exact matches out there. Warner Steel has one...
