85 CT70 reving high on its own

after bike warms up and is just sitting it decides out of nowhere do do what sounds like wide open throttle.... then i need to hit the kill switch... not a stuck throttle, not a stuck slide.... what else do i look at??

It's gotta be the throttle opening, the only thing that could do this. Check for the throttle cable hanging-up somewhere, resulting in "whiskey throttling". When this happens, shut down the engine and look inside the carb throat. This is a serious safety issue and needs to be resolved...which should be easy.

thanks racerx... but how can it go from idle to wot without twisting the grip?? bike ran fine while i was riding... then i got home and it was idiling then all of a sudden wide open throttle... i killed it as started it and it starts on wot...... so i twist the grip and no change.... then i start it and its normal.. weird.... what should i do when i take the throttle slide out?????

Take a look inside the carb when this happens and you'll see that the throttle slide is not "seated" on the stop (adjusting screw). You must figure out what's pulling it "up" against the return spring. You do have the return spring installed, inside the carb, right?

A air leek could cause idle to increase without twisting the throttle. Should between 3 o rings between the head and carb, one of those may be bad. Its probably not going wide open, it doesn't take much throttle in neutral to make it sound like the motor is going to blow up

I doubt it would get enough fuel if it were a intake leak.

I'm guessing he's missing the slide spring. Or W clip.
