Advice on refitting ST90 fuel tank

I'm coming to the point where I'm gonna refit my fuel tank; there are a lot of rubbers around the tank and I could imagine the task becoming highly annoying!!! I have repainted the tank in gloss black (due to rust and dents that have occurred in its past) and I really want to avoid scratching the tank/frame after all my hard work - has anyone got some good advice when undertaking the refit ???? Any advice appreciated ;)

Naa...it's all good. I would recommend laying the wire harness directly into the seam at the bottom of the frame. Get it to lay nice in there before you start to install the tank. Otherwise you'll be fighting against it.
Also, get the fuel lines attached and marked, if necessary...just mark the reserve line. Then tie a rope, wire, or tape, that you can use to pull the fuel lines along the proper path and out thru the frame opening. You'll need to pull the hoses out, AS you're pushing the tank in.

Thanks kirrbby - I've still got the engine out at the minute so, I can get to the fuel lines without much aggro. On the bottom of the ST90 tank, where the fuel lines attach, there is an 'R' stamped by the outlet for the reserve.

If my memory serves me rightly, the carburettor has letters stamped on it for main and reserve. My wiring loom is pretty flat in the bottom of the frame. I just gotta let the paint on the tank harden for a few days before I proceed with tank installation.

Actually, I've never gone as far as you have. And it looks like you've done a great job of it.
I have a pretty good idea of what it would take to rebuild a bike as you have.
My hat's off to you.

Its hard to get parts etc as the ST90 was an American and Japan (Mighty DAX) only vehicle and I'm across the drink from you over here in England. If I have to get parts its usually via flea bay and postage costs from USA to England are pretty steep to say the least !!! I saw a listing on there the other day and they wanted £40 just to send a single washer!!!!!!!!! Good job that my bike is mostly complete and not missing loads of parts !!! My bank balance would fry !!!!!

Im in the same boat. Im trying to build a CF70 Chaly here. Shipping is killing me. And the long wait times unless it is by DHL.

Make sure your coil and condenser are good before you bolt in the motor on that ST90.

Thanks for that 'Tripod'. When I took delivery, I spent a fair bit of time in getting it running before stripping it all down - seemed to run fine so hopefully coil and condensor are OK. Is there a way to test them prior to full installation ??

You might also want to remove a bit of paint from the areas that will need to make metal-to-metal contact with the frame...ground points. Paint can insulate the connections and prevent/degrade the grounds.

Wow, nice paint. May I ask what color (or color code) of yellow that you are using? I just spent three hours working on a small section of the frame, and prefer your color of yellow much more than the original yellow. Best regards, Ed.

Hi echobravo (I guess that means E.B.)
Thanks for the compliment ;) I actually dont know the colour/code as it wasn't me who supplied the paint but, I will try and find out for you. I know its an industrial paint colour but I dont have any codes or names etc of the paint. If I find out, it may not correspond with whats available to you over there in the States as I live in England and codes/names etc might not be the same :).

Hi Sandra
Yes, I do use CMSNL but, the postage them has altered aswell, they put the cost up and whether you buy 1 small item (E.G. a single bolt) you still have to pay £15.00 so, its good if you have a big order but bad if you only need a single item (but, obviously dependant on what the item is and its value.) :cautious: Still better than most places though ;)
