Hello all
New to the ct70 scene. Have a few questions.
I just picked up a 1971 ct70h in original condition.
It runs nice ,and tops out at about 38mph.
do you all think that is correct?
I read service manual and it says top speed is 45mph?
Engine doesn't miss a beat , and pulls strong through out the rev range.
Has new 14T - 45T sprockets (same ratio as origonal)
I checked ignition timing with timing light and it was right on mark.
Also was wondering about handle bars , they seem very narrow to me but dont appear to be bent you think thats normal?
Ill try to post pics

I would say install a speed app on your phone and re test. I would pull the filter out of the air box and check if it flaking apart and in need of replacement. Clean and lightly oil it. Air up the tires to 20 psi. Check the wheel bearings. A slightly bigger point gap advances the timing and can give you possibly more top speed. .016 is a good gap. You said you replaced the sprockets, did you replace the chain too? My HK0 did 42, when I was 11 years old. There were several versions of bars from different vendors back in the day at Honda according to racerx. From narrow to stupid narrow, so I would say that is normal.

Tires both have 20psi in them and new chain along with sprockets
Air filter element is new , and lightly oiled , and Im 200lbs forgot to mention that.
I will check point gap .

By looking at the pictures- that right hand bar definitely looks bent. Changing them will amazingly change the ride. When I got mine in 99 no one was making bars yet so I spent alot of time on ebay. Found a nos right side never a left. Did find what I thought was a decent left but apon install found it was bent up between the grip and the down turn. After riding for a bit it actually hurt my shoulder. New CHP bars that came out back then really made a big difference.

Nice first year inspection sticker. I would leave that on the rear fender. Good history. It's safe to say there is a title somewhere for the bike. Be sure to use 4 stroke motorcycle specific oil with zinc. 10/40 weight is a good choice for the cold weather soon to hit N.J. Once summer hits, change to 20/50. Regular car oil is to be avoided, as it will make the clutch slip.

I will definitely leave that inspection sticker on rear fender even though I'm in NY. Cool part of history.
I ordered honda 10w40 will arive soon.
I drained oil into a clean container because I wanted to put magnet on drain plug and saw a bunch of metal flakes. I may have to open clutch cover and investigate. I added a little ATF to oil to flush out crank case

I can’t answer any of your questions but that’s a nice bike! His forum is the best place to find all the info you will need on your HK0.

i ran the speed app on my phone and its right on with the speedometer 38mph top speed.
I think it may be running a little lean on the top end because it was about 25 degrees colder when i ran the speed test and had a top end miss .
Im going to try one size up on the main jet this week
