CT70 Cylinder reassembly questions

Hi: Just starting to put the little gem back together and I've already hit a bump. There are two steel cylinders, I'm guessing they are oil jackets and or alignment pins for the cylinder to head. I've attached a picture. They came apart attached to the cylinder and I was able to tap them out.
It seems that I should put these into the block to avoid splitting the gasket with the fat end of the tube. But when I try to tap it in it does not want to go in easily. I thought I could press it in but stopped when it would not go in easily. Didn't want to strip the threads.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Rob

Those are your dowels. There should be two for the jug and two for the head. The ones in the picture look like they have swelled up and are now worthless.

They should slide in relatively easy if the case has had a good cleaning. Sometimes the area can get rusty too. It's easier to put the dowel in with the studs in already.
Make sure you arent trying to use the larger dowels for the crankcases.

I agree with Tripod.
There are 2 for case to cylinder, and 2 for cylinder to head. They are 2 different lengths also.
The bulge in the one pictured is not supposed to be there. It's probably junk. But you could try finding a right sized drill bit to fit inside, then roll it on a flat steel surface, trying to use the bit to remove the bulge. Small chance it could work.
The dowels should only go in half way...sticking out to go into the mating part. They only go into the 2 left stud holes on the engine case. And only 2 of the holes on the cyl/head too. (Can't remember which holes)

***Use the smooth shank portion of the drill bit, of course.

The two studs on the right side of the case must be installed before you install the dowels, which are 8x12. The two other dowels are 8x14 and go in the lower right and upper left holes on the cylinder, as you are looking at it. Parts #14 and #15 in the diagram below.

Hmmm. Well that makes sense but that is the way they came out. Need to order a few things anyway. Thanks guys! Who is your go to supplier for small stuff like this?

Theoretically if you only need small stuff like that you could go to your Honda dealer. No sense paying shipping charges on things like that. But not all dealers want to be bothered looking up that small stuff. My dealer gave me 10% off when I walked in with part numbers. They most likely will have to order them but if you hit the right day stuff comes fast from where ever the warehouse is. Your looking for Pin A, Dowel 8x14 94301-0840 for the head to the cylinder and Pin A, Dowel 8x12 94301-08120 for the cylinder to case. If your replacing them all it takes 2 of each

Good suggestion for the local dealer. Didn't know he was there but has been a great help. No shipping and generally less pricey than the on line suppliers on stuff that's still available from Honda. This has been interesting, made some first time mistakes, the dowels being one of them. Got the engine running, checked the clutch and trans and all is well. Took the motor off again to clean and paint now that I know all is good to go. The dealer is also going to install a helicoil in one of the foot peg bolt holes that someone had cross threaded. I tried to chase it but was not confident enough to support the pegs.
Once that is all back together I'll tackle the 50 year old tires, shocks and other bits.
Happy New Year to All!
