My God Daughter was left an old Honda Cub 50 by her late father. During handling, the kick starter was broken off flush with the case seal. I am attempting to source parts but need direction. The bike i.d. # C100L051469. I just want to make sure I purchase the correct parts. Thanks!

Upon closer inspection, you'll probably find the the letter "L" you posted above should be an "E" for engine. You can find a new one in stock right HERE, part #16 on the microfiche, and the first one of two listed is what your engine VIN requires.

According to the Honda Motorcycle Identification Guide, the bike is a 1959-1962 model, and being that it is 63+ years old is reflected in the price of the new kickstarter.

I am just going by the information on the title. The tag on the steering head stay is not legible. I'm guessing, seeing the shaft above, that the transmission will have to be disassembled in order to perform this repair. Is there a separate number stamping on the engine itself?

Yes, it should be below the front drive sprocket, behind the shift lever.

You do have to split the cases to remove and replace the kickstarter shaft.

Thanks! So, splitting the cases would require, basically, tearing down the entire engine. Cylinder removal, etc. I'd need a gasket set besides the kick starter shaft and seal. Any special tooling required?

Yes, I suggest watching some videos on You Tube University. Does it push start? How many miles on it? A full inspection/rebuild is probably in order.

I will attempt to find the engine number stamping. I'm in Tennessee and the bike is currently in northern Indiana. Is it possible to replace the entire engine with a newer one including electric start?

Yes, you should be able to use a 12V 125cc Lifan engine with electric start, you would need a 12V battery and upgrade all the light bulbs to 12V. Certain Lifan engines on Amazon do come with their own wiring harness, it would be up to you to adapt the bike harness to the Lifan.

You'll have to browse around if you want a semi-auto engine, most are 4- speed manual trans setup.

That shaft is a pretty common point of failure/ breakage, reflected in the cost of finding a replacement. In a pinch the kicker shaft can have a shift shaft welded to it and itll work just fine. A guy i know local had done it. If you do decide to split the case instead of full replace let me know and i might have a replacement kicker shaft around here, in a stuck engine or something. I seem to have acquired a decent stack of c100 and c102 engines over the years somehow.

Being a pushrod engine vs ohc makes the split slightly less challenging.

Oh, youll also need a flywheel puller tool to get that apart, in response to your question about special tooling.

Thank you! I will touch base with you should we decide to go that route. I've rebuilt a few motorcycle engines in the past. A KZ1000 four cylinder that I hot rodded, big bore kit, performance cams, bigger carburetors. A 500cc Honda XL motor that I did in the basement of my apartment overnight and then drove 200 miles to a new job. The work doesn't intimidate me. I just don't want to put a bunch of money into something not worthy. It is more of a sentimental thing I'd like to make right for my God Daughter.
