72HK1 For CJ

Thanks kiirrbby. I am kinda surprised that frame wasnt making some of kinda noise or didnt feel right.
Yeah, that potluck bike had been nagging at me lately anyways.

Many years ago, early 70's, a friend had a Gemini SST which had a 2 stroke 50 in it. Turns out that it had the same bolt pattern as Yamaha did so he put a 80 in it. Never noticed or felt anything until someone realized that the foot pegs were starting to hit the cut off harvested corn stalks. The frame had cracked right in two somewhere right behind the tank.
Put my vote in to find another frame- just keep the old one as well.

That speaks to the quality of engineering in this design. The lack of symptoms isn't that surprising, because the operational load forces are very well distributed, with heaviest shock loads & most of weight supported by the upper shock mounts. The surrounding areas are incredibly strong.

At the swingarm pivot/lower engine mount area, the swingarm, foot brake crossbar and engine block all add structural rigidity, with only very small unsupported acreage. The compound curves of the frame stamping and internal reinforcing do the rest. Look where the failure is...a flat, unsupported, un-braced, area. This is why the outwardly visible damage only occurred after a lot of metal was lost to rust and even then, it took a heavy hit to start the dominoes falling.

A well hit taken that left me noticing what happened instead of failing me in a brute way. On its last ride, Im going to make a sharpie mark on the crack, and get an idea of its crack/rate. I will check it after 1mile and 2mile.

Well guys, I just wiped her out .........bigtime. I have roadrash and all. I took a turn, went into 2nd, and she went out from under me with future plans. Yes, I was driving her hard and popped the clutch. She's banged up and scrapped on pavement. I feel like hell. My knees, shoulder, elbows. and my basic body all hurts.lol.
I just have not had the heart to strip this bike and just took it out.........literally.lol

Well, I straitened her out.
Reason Im posting is I just drove her in a parade this evening. I had an ABSOLUTE BLAST. Musclecar guys were all over it asking me about it, just for me to break the frame news.....but there was this little kid I drove right next too on his little 2stroke bike. I think he was about 6yrs old and he liked the HK1. For about 2miles, "You watch my right flank and I got your left" and he was my little buddy all the way. People were throwing candy and crap, but he stayed true to where he was going. Btw.....I had a blast.lol

Anyway, I think I'm going to sell all the bikes as a whole deal. My daughter needs a car next June and I need one myself too.

Anyone here thinks I shouldnt or wants in on this...Im here

Hope you're all healed up CJ. Sounds like you were lucky on that one. I've hit the road once myself...learned a valuable lesson that day and lived to tell about it. lol

Sorry to hear that your selling off your bikes tho. You know you'll be looking for another at some point. I think you won't be able to live without a CT70 for long.

How about your candy yellow project. Are you going to sell that one off too?? That would be the one that you should keep...or sell to me...😁

That bike should be built like it supposed to and donated to a good cause. A lot of members scrounged up good parts and paid the shipping to give you all that stuff. No one would have helped you if they knew you would pull this stunt.

Your right. I just cant do it. Alot of times I get hounded by others around me and I forget what I REALLY should be doing.
Since I've had to move, Everything is still all packed up.

Sorry to just get to you, but I was at work and ran out of time on my lunch. My laptop was also crashed at home and just now is up and running.

I still have some after effects on my knee, but its livable.lol. It was very disheartening to see my 50yr unbent bars....bent. Well, the right side anyway. The brake handle was also dislodged w/rash on the end of the rubber tip as the throttle grip. The muffler gaurd has a little rash on the back bottom. I'm surprised the tail fixture was unharmed and the forks. Everything else seems to be ok. What really threw me when the bike went nuts wasnt the wheelie, but it just flat out went from under me and went to the right. Never had that combo happen before in all my years of riding. last time a bike went out from under me was a 1969 Kawasaki Mach III 500 3cyl 3 carb 2 stroke. When it hit 3K rpm, it went nuts on the power band.lol.

As for the potluck bike, my initial idea was to sell only the HK1 and the K3, but the K1 needs major parts from the HK1, forks, bars, ect. The K3 is beat to hell, but runs/drives reliably. Maybe worth 600. The HK1, maybe 1000, but has probably 2000plus worth of parts on it. I had messaged Bob about the tins from it, but he has since disappeared. Still wonder about him. The potluck bike, there's 1000's of stuff there. I also have a boat load of other OEM used parts in my storage shed. Z50 and CT70 stuff, probably around 1000 worth of stuff. Thats the crap I should probably sell off. There are K0 engine cases, hubs, and other bunch of crap.

Anyways, I'm sorry that I offended anyone.

Well guys....she's gone. I feel totally kicked in the gut. I added her on FBMP. A bidding war started. I told them the frame is cracked,,,,,,,but it didnt matter. You wouldnt believe me what it brought for cash. I was blown away. I can now build the pot luck bike 5 times over now.lol.................I still feel kicked in the balls and gut right now. I feel like I sold my soul. I hate hard decisions. I wanted to chase the truck back down and demand my bike back when I saw it leave, but they paid dearly for the privilege
