Anyone else strip a speedo gear?

Out of the thousands of miles I have put on ct70’s, never has one failed. I hear a slight squeak rising around yesterday and couldn’t pinpoint where it was coming from. Today I took the wheel off and noticed half of the speedo gear was striped while the other half was still good. Any reason for something like this to happen? Also, I guess I’ll ask if anyone has one laying around to sell. Thanks for the read.

That was my thought as well but there was plenty of grease still all around the inside where the gears mesh so I thought maybe something else may have caused a bind. I’ll make sure to lube the new gear up really well. I suppose the grease was old and dried out where it wasn’t as effective. Thanks for the reply.

Did you remove the gear and reinstall ?
Some remove the gear to polish and clean the hub - they are tapped in place and there is a small wafer washer and a little room left to move .
If this was just a lube issue no problem carry on - if this was an alignment of the hub gear issue - look to find the problem .

I did have the tire removed to change the tube a short while back but have been riding it since with no issues until recently. Where is the water washer supposed to be? I don’t ever recall seeing one. Thanks for the information.

I don't see many on ebay. They, ebay drove all the small parts guys away. ''N.O.S. parts now'' is offering one for the low low price of $72.64+4.12 shipping+tax :LOL: and a real crappy looking China offering for 10 bucks. It looks like the gear is too sharp and will probably screw something up.

I misunderstood I suspect - which gear are we talking about exactly . Is it the smaller drive in the hub outer or the larger that drives it - .
I noticed there are scores on both drives - soo dont be noticing them - normal

The smaller gear inside the hub looks good and spins freely. I’ll hope for the best next time with a good amount of grease inside.

Chp sells them but I think they may be out of stock as of now…I would check and make sure nothing tighten up inside the speedo it’s self also. I ordered the $10 one from china just to see if it’s junk or not…I figured $10 wouldn’t brake my bank…it hasn’t showed up yet but will let you know when it comes if it’s junk or not.. one of the ct’s I’m building had one shelled out,,,first one I had ever seen do that,, I just figured the cable was dry and getting tight loading the gears up??

I saw that $10 china one as well. Please let me know how it goes for you, in case I need another one in the future. CHP has an aftermarket one so guessing it’s a Chinese one also, maybe Taiwan at best would be my guess.

Ok..will do..I ordered a complete used brake plate that showed it having a speedo gear off eBay but when it came there was no gear so I returned it..

Just installed another speedo gear. I did take the speedo cable off just to see if it spun freely and I will say there was quite a bit of resistance. Took it apart and lubed it up and the cable spins much more freely. Put some fresh grease in the speedo gears and it’s working great so far, all 3 miles. Will see how it plays out.

Just so everyone knows the ct70 eBay speedo gear that came from china looks to be good but the big problem is it came as a 20 tooth and a 10 inch wheeled ct70 has a 23 tooth..the eBay ad states “ Dax ct70 st70 “ I think an sl70 has a 20? Does an st70 have sl70 style rims? Anyway don’t waste your time an $ on these..I sent them a message threw eBay and we will see what they are going to do..

I ordered a new one from chp…again looks like its made well but it also came as a 20 tooth!! I’ll call chp on Monday and see what they say?
