Beautiful Ruby Red Match

Wanted to post up a picture of the closest Ruby Red Color match that I've seen. Sample was provided by Ayers Garage and compared against original paint from under the decal of one of my K0's. Now here is the kicker, it's powdercoat. Sending one of my bikes off to have Ayer's work on it. Can't beat the price and I've seen his finished product. Beautiful work.

X2 on Ayers Garage . . . This is not your father's powder coat. Ayers Garage is meticulous with prep and application and the results are stunning. Very affordable. The colors are deep and rich and the finish is ultra shiny and tough as nails. Candy Ruby Red, Gloss Black and Chrome are three really usefull powders for CT restorers. Some of the other Candy colors (applied over the right base) are just mind-blowing in case you are contemplating a non-standard color for your build.
Nice guy too . . .
You can find him here . . . Ayers Garage Restoration Services

i agree,he is the premier guy for motorcycle restoration with powder coat.he knows what he is doing.and your parts are in good hands.period.

I've seen his work and I'm going to have him use his ultrachrome on some aftermarket rims that keep rusting on me. I think I'll do the hubs too.:4:

I don't think you will be disappointed Grant, a buddy of mine just had a bunch of parts done by Ayers Garage including a set of hubs and they look awsome.

I'm going to use him for my current military ct project. His work speaks for itself. Even masking bearing bores and critical areas he's the pro.

What about the plastic side covers for an SL70. Would the powder coating process melt them?

Not sure you can powder coat plastic. If you did it would have to be low temp so it wouldnt melt. I dont know of any places that do. I have both of my bikes powder coated, turned out great!

I found a local powder coater that had a very good match for Ruby Red too. The headlight bucket in the picture is OEM, the rest is powder coat.

Excndez or scooter,

Do you know what brand and color the powder coat is? They both look awesome! If I can get the powder myself and do my own blasting I could probably have my CT powder coated locally for not much more then it would cost for me to paint it.

You should call around to places local and see prices. I had a place do the one im working on now for 127$ for everything, I blasted all the small stuff, they did the frame. Pretty good price for the candy color I got with holographic flake. Thats a 3 coat process! They had a slew of nice candy colors on display!

Excndez . . . Thats the way you do it . . . looks great. .
Thats exactly what I am doing it with our summer build. The nice color match on the powder makes it possible.
I'm having Ayers PC my chain guard and shock covers along with the frame but your chrome looks nice too
Thefox . . . I just send my frame and parts to ayers . . . he is very affordable and he has already figured all this stuff out. You should give him a call and then see if you think its worth your time. Unless you just love beadblasting or something he is all setup to do this the right way the first time. There's a bit of an art to it.

when powder coating what do you guys do about the rubber bushing inside the rear swing arm? my pops had a CT powder coated and the rubber melted out so he had to machine a bushing to fit back in.

Really ? . . . Its about 400 deg. I think . . . so I wouldnt expect swing arm bushings to melt but I will ask. I know Ayers has some special ($$$) silicone plugs and soforth that he uses for some spots. But seriously . . . if a 400 deg spell in the oven will melt swing arm bushings that would solve a big problem for lots of folks, as removing them to press in new ones (still available from Honda) is one of the least fun activities that you can do with a CT.

As for plastic, it can't be done. Powder coating requires an electrical charge to make the media (paint, if you will) stick. So the part must be made of a conductive material.

As for the swing arm bushing, my guess would be control of the oven temperature. A large production shop may bake many different parts from different jobs at one time, and the temp may be too high for the bushing rubber to withstand it. A good small coater like Ayers Garage does one job at a time. If he thinks the bushing can't handle the temperature he uses to cure, he will let you know, or remove the bushing. Not to say anything bad about other coaters, but Ayers is the one I'm most familiar with. He won't steer you wrong.

Yeah I left mine in on both bikes and both times were fine. The transparent candy style colors are cook at a lower temp. And my last bike had 3 different coats all done separately then rebaked and the bushings are fine.
