CA CT70s

Calling all californian ct70 owners. So I have two ct70 frames with bill of sales. One is a 1970. No titles unfortunately, so i plan on doing the vermont registration route. My only concern is both frames have the "off road use only" badges. Now these stickers can "disappear" but is this verbage going to come up when the vin is run? A lot of other states typically only requre lights, signals etc to get it street legal. Whereas now CA requires it come from the factory as street legal. Am I screwed here?

If the DMV can screw you, they will no matter where you live. California has gotten so bad, that I would sell the frames and get a bike that already has a title and registration. Not sure how, but hornetgod used to live in Cali a few years ago and managed it, but that was a few years ago and I'm sure its gotten worse. They'll probably want a smog pump on it too.lol

I would think that the VIN tag statement would be enough to over ride the side badges. Maybe put an STP sticker or something over it at inspection.

Had a friend who rebuilt salvaged bikes in Alabama in the 90's, He told me that that the people at the tag office/ DMV can be your best friend or worst nightmare.

All good points. I’ve probably spent weeks at the dmv if you add all the hours up. I usually try to be as nice as I can to the dmv person wether they know what they’re doing or not. However I’m still wondering if my specific vin refers to and “off road” only ct70. Or if they just see the ct70 as 50 state legal. Keeping my fingers crossed.

No, there's nothing in the VIN that would indicate that. In fact, the VIN tag has the D.O.T. compliance verbiage. If you have to get the bike physically inspected, just cover or remove the offending sidebadge. CT70s have been road legal since the first K0 rolled off the line. The only change I've noted is the "motor driven cycle" wording beginning with the mid 1970s vintage models...not sure where that began. Best guess would be 1975+/- one model year.

What a lot of folks do not realize is how much of the titling process depends upon the clerk you happen to be dealing with.

Right on once again thank you for the solid info! I always feel better heading in there with info rather than asking them what to do haha. One of my frames is missing the vin tag on the neck but it’s still clearly stamped on the frame so hopefully they don’t gripe about that.

There used to be an ebay seller...based in Switzerland...selling reproduction VIN tags, engraved & ready to install. He's completely legit and good about keeping the SN & D.O.M. consistent...IOW no shenanigans.

I just figured out that .ch websites are based in Switzerland, so maybe the eBay sellers Racerx mentioned and these guys are the same people?

Pretty cool site. I'll have to save that one. Apes, I would take the CT with the missing tag first to get registered and point out where the numbers are on the frame and keep mum about the lack of a neck tag. That way if they saw both bikes together they can't compare and see the difference and ask questions.
