clutch plates 1971 k1 3 speed

I am in the process of cleaning the oil screen on my buddies bike. Have 2 questions? #1 while I'm in there cleaning the screen , i thought about replacing the fiber plates and spring's.. The clutch is not slipping but I'm sure they r the original plates.. i haven't removed the side cover yet. I see that the clutch plate kit, 18 tooth is available for $70.00. to $80 dollars . what is everyone's take just replacing the plate only or go for the complete kit? question #2 i hear everyone saying to replace the clutch pack screws (phillips head) with allen screws . what size r the allen screws? tapered I'm assuming? and where can a person find them?? thank's your input would be much appreciated.. have happy safe 4th july!!!!!
 
The mail things are :

Soak the new friction discs overnight in clean motor oil .

The side cover screws are J.I.S. #2, this equals out to a #3 Phillips, use a manual impact driver and 32 oz. or heavier hammer to strike it so each screw looses easily without damage .

The Allen screws are O.K. -but- they're slightly different threads so $pending a few $ on the correct J.I.S. screwdriver so you can re use the original screws is wise . I suggest only buying a Japanese made "strike through" typ, they'll usually loosen even old buggered up screws .

Pay close attention to the sequence of steel plates and small springs ! .

Honda used that I can recall, at least FOUR different AutoClutches on 90CC engines and all are interchangeable but -one- misplaced steel disc will screw it all up .

The alloy clutch basket proper tends to silt up with sludge in the recesses where the plates go so be sure to clean it out inside well .

When re assembling it's very easy to have the bike leaned away from you and the clutch pedal on the other side touches the ground, this will cause incorrect alignment of the release mechanism and force incorrect operation .

Smearing a thin coat of grease on the inside of the side cover gasket to ensure it doesn't tear the next time It's apart for routine service .

SMSNL will have all the correct parts you need including the correct J.I.S. screws .

Let us know how it goes, take some pictures of the pieces .
 
CMSNL is great for part reference but ordering can take a awhile if your in the USA.
Also FEDEX will bill you seperate for shipping.
And their communication is not all that great if you have questions.
 
I've never had any separate freight bills .

I'm sure any moto parts supply place can get the friction discs cheaply and rapidly .
