CT70 Brake Shoes, late 74 to 76

What changed in the front and rear hubs of late 74 (VIN 2320002 and up) to 76 models? I noticed on DrATV he is listing a few of the different aftermarket brake shoes from K0 to 74 (up to VIN 2320002) and then 77 to 94. Also noticed that Honda has different PN's for those years.

I ask because I am curious, plus I have a pile of hubs from unknown years and it would be nice to know if I can ID the odd ball ones.

Just a guess, but it might be in the shoes and the two springs that connect the shoes together, in those years the springs were longer and went over part of the shoe if that makes sense. The shoes might be the same diameter as the older/newer ones, but the location of the spring holes changed.

That appears to exactly be it, but, is there a physical difference in the brake panel/hub where I wouldn't be able to interchange the shoes? I would assume that there has to be something, or else Honda wouldn't continue to produce two different models of shoes.

Late 74 to 76 shoes currently go under Honda PN 06430-GBJ-J10 and look like:

The other years currently go under Honda PN 06450-178-932 and look like:

Some aftermarket brake shoes list `69-`94 fitment right on the box, along with `68-late `70s Z50s, and other models. Only differences I've noticed are the different spring types, as already mentioned. Brake shoe cross-compatibility makes a lot of sense...fewer part numbers mean lower cost for the manufacturer. Honda is in business to make a profit, always has been.

Perhaps I'm missing something, too. The only differences I've noted with CT70 brakes are with the backing plates, cams & actuator arms. The post `74s have wear indicators, that fit over the splined end of the cam and index marks cast into the backing plates, along with dust seal washers. The later cams have spiral grooves cut into the pivot area of the shaft, the end detailing, where the shoes contact, is different and the cam pivot diameters & lengths can differ from the earlier versions.

All of which having been said, I've yet to run across any CT70 that needed a set of brake shoes that were different from any other. So far...knock on wood...the flat section, which seats one end of the brake shoe, has remained constant.

I put new shoes in the front hub of my K1. The springs that hold the shoes together were alot different than the originals, but work nevertheless.
