I wonder if she was saying the same thing 50 years ago when she was in the passenger seat of some "muscle" car while a 50 year older lady was saying the same about hemis and strait pipes and burnouts.

Her facts are also highly inaccurate. New "econo-boxes" are faster, more efficient and better than ever. Take a look at cars like the new STI, that has 4 doors and can smoke pretty much anything, and you can put baby seats in the back. The US still embraces this pro brute force muscle car attitude, when nothing is further from the truth. Light weight, good handling vehicles that can put moderate HP #'s to the pavement always outrun bulky front heavy boats that simply cannot do anything but go strait after smoking tires and launching sideways.

all i will say is ford cosworth consumer version is a car even chevy and honda guys drool over round here.can reach 1000hp and smoke sti's lambos porsche chevy ect. ect. ect.
the honda civic though likes to basically eat money and gas but go nowhere withing a time limit. the 6 cyl is great though. all of these 4cylinders are very key to good cars but unlike the previous comment to get into tuner kid racing #1 the muscle dont spin with traction control and a good rear diff. #2 acc. vs top speed and areo v8 has the acc. the 4cyl. beats it with speed in the long run. however they need turbos ect. a stock v8 is faster than a stock 4 evenly matched with turbo/charger and exhaust ect. the 4 would be smoke in the wind.the 4s are getting there just not a good race car when dealing in safety vs speed. nascar needs the horses to haul the gear if it were 4cyl. it wouldn't be 200mph for 4 hours ect. because regulation would weight the cars to high hell.all that weight reduction goes to hell with a cage damage panels, air brakes(flaps), harnesses, equipt. ect. the 4's would overheat and die.4 cylinders are nice but leave them on residential roads please these tuner kids in civics are getting more accidents caused and they just plain are damn annoying.we have hemi, shelby, and ss drivers that are more freindly and less stupid than the college kids cutting you off for going 90mph in a 60 then being pulled over or hitting an obstruction. my simple rule sure i may go the the speed limit but you are going 90mph into that pole and im going 45 around the bend.i like my 4 cylinder just not as a race car.and i know that if i were dumb enought to put a turbo my motors life would be cut short due to excessive wear, cars were made stock because it is the best way they run and work in the long run.

The reality is most V8 cars made by the big three, in true stock form, were not fast. Look at the slews of V8 cameros, firebirds, mustangs through the 80's and 90's. They were all true high 14 second cars. My mothers supercharged buick regal was faster than my brothers 87 trans am GTA.

Sure, turbos are usually used on high performance 4cyl engines. BUT - they run better, are better on fuel, last a long time, and give you power when you need it, and don't waste fuel when you don't. They are also light weight. V8 pushrod engines that use 100 year old technology only do one thing, they are a one trick pony.

The muscle car era saw HP come easy as can be. Take any old school car, do the rear end gears, high stall converter, shift kit, cam intake and exhaust and high 10's were possible while still being on the edge of streetable. Can you do this with a 4cyl? probably not. We are comparing apples to oranges, the majority of muscle cars in true factory tune were high 14 second cars at best. Anything modded to run faster was terrible on fuel (especially on the highway) and unreliable with constant wrench time needed. As for road handling, forget about it.

New technology allows cars to make HP, still be reliable, still be reasonable on fuel, and light, good handling, good braking, etc...

The V8 is just a thing of the past, a unless you go a ZR1 style route for the ultimate car, if you have the $ go for it. Most of the old school cars were noisy, spun tires, and displacement numbers were bragging rights. Coffee shop ET's were usually 1-2 seconds faster than reality.

i wont get into wasting my time to say whats wrong with the little 4's. all i can say is if people worried less about racing with these little cars and more about the real reason they were made to save gas then yes they would be good. as for the kids with the little fart mufflers i see them every day on the side of the road 2 yesterday flipped over and one just died in a telephone pole. i ask just because its light is it really as safe as they say? we had the same telephone pole acc. and the driver was prob going a little faster because the car was heavier but he survived and the car didnt split in 2!( like the VW) if they had the safety issues figured out and stopped selling the good 4 cyl. to the uk wed be good. ill admit the old muscle was too heavy but you know what they are admired for years and they started the whole "tuner" craze so pay respect to history. not brag about the little matchbox cars out there.this is not a knock or any kind of offense meant just really ticked right now at the fact the kid died (he was only 22 volunteer fire fighter) and also why do we need any more of these "race" cars on the road?they should lock out the engine so you cannot up grade squat unless you take it to the track.
seriously back when we were not so dependent on oil we paid more attn. to details of quality. and it showed the muscle cars showed modern ingenuity these "new" 4 cyl cars use the same damn tech as all the other 4 cyl. the jet fire was one of the early muscle cars and they brought turbo a new meaning and showed america what it could do . so i ask why knock them? daily driver no. classic worthy of respect. yes. we need more public tracks and safety mech for these kids who are obsessed with racing so at least they will have a better chance at not being killed.

sorry just a little emotional over the kids that died recently and had a freaind die while walking the side walk from a tuner. not fun dealings.as for the 8's i just like to look at em and remember maybe a little cruise not fond of going too fast.
