Early ct70 1969 (and others) horn restore.

This horn came stock on my blue 1969 ct70 that ill be restoring... I cleaned, stripped an painted the main body then sent the screws, cover, an mount off with my parts to be rezinked. Then stumbled on new gaskets off eBay..(wow couldn’t believe someone was selling them)I was going to replace the gray wire cover but I didn’t want to cut off the original connectors and it’s not cracked any where and has the perfect stiffness to stay in the headlight. It worked before I hope like hell it still does!!!! lol

I don't think I've ever seen anyone restore one before...not sure. The newer style horns don't come apart like that...plus it's still cheap and easy to buy new ones...of the newer style.

Thanks Kirrbby,,,if you look close at the inter workings I think these horns are made way better then the new style crimped horns…the fact that it still works says a lot to me being not many of the crimped horns ever work when there the originals from 50 years ago..plus you said they sound better in another post…lol

Robert, nice work. I'd like to try and rebuild my horn, but it's from a K1 with the newer "crimp" style. Can they be opened up?

Have you ever tried to rebuild the crimp style, or is it better/cheaper/faster to go with a new aftermarket horn? Thanks!

I opened up an old one that didn't work. It can be done, the metal crimp isn't too difficult to pry up. Not sure in the end it would be worth it as new oem horns are still available. Robert had no choice as the silver tag horns are not available that I'm aware of. Here's a link to a reputable vendor for a new horn.

I would agree with jhminitrails and just buy a new oem horn for around $40. I’ve personally never tried to open one up being there pretty cheap to buy… only the fairly early 1969‘s had the horn with the black body and the screws holding it together.… my next restoration is a blue 69 that came with the horn I restored in this thread. Wanted to keep it with the bike….

No problem. Here's what you can expect to find. I gave up after I realized how difficult it would be to remove the organs and reassemble it. But I was always curious about what was inside one

JHminitrails - Awesome! Those photos are exactly what I was interested in. They say a picture is worth 1000 words, so I owe you 4983 more...lol.

More importantly, my curiosity has been satisfied so onto bigger and better things (like trying to get a factory look using MetalCast rattle cans...)
