I like the sound of mine:D It sounds real beefy, and its pretty loud so you can hear me comin, thinkin about getting a BBR Muffler, I can get them at cost.

My personal favorite is the Kitaco stainless/carbon. I modified the baffle to more of the race pipe configuration. With a high-compression 137 Honda motor it's louder than I'd like, but tolerable once you're moving. Has a serious thump at idle.

The best cheap exhaust is a modified CT70 unit. Looks stock but the baffle has been opened-up and the outlet is a larger than stock.

From what I've been told, the best flowing pipe is the titanium Yoshimura tri-oval. It's expensive and the muffler is silly-huge for a CT70.

I will probably go with a modified stock to maintain the original look and I do need one since mine is completely rusted through. Can you recommend a place to buy a k1 exhaust for a 72? Thank you

If you're going to have the pipe modded, then this is one instance where you'll do better buying a jincheng replacement pipe off ebay. Stock, the baffle opening is tiny (smaller than OE Honda) and the baffle is welded-in, but everything else is pretty much the same as the current K1 replacement pipe. The Chinese pipes also appear to have a stronger rear mount. If you're a purist, then keep your original heatshield. The new ones all have large/small holes in them, where the K1 had large holes/slots.

But it will look good on my ZB50!

For the CT70, the Kitaco offering is the best bet as X pointed out. It's a really nice piece.

Pony is correct about the aesthetics, what looks good on a ZB doesn't necessarily translate to a CT and vice versa.

what are the things to be checked when choosing a muffler for ct

Talk to somebody who has the exhaust you want and get their impressions on it. I like downpipes better then up-pipes (up pipes route the same as stock) due to the fact I can run more components (catch tanks, etc) on the bike without things getting in the way and there are more choices overseas. If you run a downpipe, you can run a right side VM26 Mikuni carb and intake as well. However, you have to be selective and talk with others so you don't make a bad purchase.

Racer - I sold my Yosh for the ZB and got something more exclusive. Too many people running the Type 5's on ZB's for my liking so I picked another flavor of Titanium..:D

Pony Express is a lot more open-minded than I am on the subject of CT70 exhausts. Downpipe choices outnumber upmounts 5 to 1 and there are some really fine systems available. Things to consider:

  • Ground clearance...Downpipes and offroading don't mix; up-pipes are dual-purpose

  • Plan on carrying a passenger?...If you do, then your choices are extremely limited. Most up-pipes get hot enough to roast your passenger's right leg. I've yet to see a downpipe that didn't conflict with the RH buddy peg.

  • Performance & sound...Go beyond a stock motor and you'll want a free-flowing pipe. The bigger the tune, the more difference a good pipe makes. Many pipes are offered in both quiet and straight-through muffler designs. Power & decibel level tend to exist at opposite ends of the continuum, but louder isn't necessarily faster. How loud a muffler is depends in large part upon the engine. This is where testing and other's experiences matter most. The only proven method for combining mellow sound and big flow is with a well-designed, large muffler. The Yosh tri-oval on that green bike is about as good as it gets, but it's obnoxiously large on a CT70. Custom work, where possible, can bridge the gap.

  • Aesthetics...All else being equal, and it mostly is, the desicion is mainly a matter of personal taste. If you like the way it looks, then go for it.

  • Quality...speaks for itself. Price is usually a tip-off. The best systems are made from 3-series stainless or titanium

  • Price...How much are you willing to invest? Top quality systems carry real price tags, same as any other bike, regardless of size. There's no free lunch just because it's a CT70.

PE...I'd like to see a minimalist-design downpipe, preferably in stainless, with just enough internal baffling to prevent brain damage at WOT. That's unlikely to ever see the light of day until an individual takes on the project.;)

Have you seen my Titanium Samn pipe on the Z50A? It's small, is not loud and has a really good sound to it, and it mounts to one of the bolts that hold on the footpeg assembly, and was under $200! Unfortunately, the company no longer exists and it's a shame as it's a darn good pipe.. It would be perfect for what you want. I think I've emailed you pics in the past.
