Hello, I am new to this forum.

I picked up a CT70, born on date 12/70. I plan on restoring the bike. Looking forward to the wealth of knowledge here.

A question I have for starters is for the chrome parts, re-chrome or replace? Anybody know of a good place to send parts to be re-chromed? I already ordered an OEM exhaust and an OEM large heat shield for the exhaust. Still have to get the small, curved shield. I am in no hurry as I plan to handle this project over a couple of years.

Welcome - nice example . CHP is a good site - helps to know where you’re located and similar nearby members may be a big help . Hope this helps

Great that should key up some members - I know of 1 that builds in that vicinity - FL - and he posts his builds here constantly .
As far as chroming - I try to remove rust with derusting chemicals but it’s time consuming and a fair bit of scrubbing and preening to end up with an original piece that is not new but it’s presentable . Or you can buy new which may be cheaper than sending out for chrome . The example would be a rear fender - still available relatively inexpensive .
As far as your exhaust CHP sells a complete with shields aftermarket or new . All your decision but the forum can help you gather some experience rather than you learning it by - I should have . So gather your thoughts and post them up .

CHP is sold out on the exhaust. I found an OEM exhaust and main shield so far thanks to Old CT aka Patrick. Thanks for the info on re-chroming. I have learned before making errors by way of forums like this before. Most recently for a 1975 Honda 360T.

Do OEM fenders have part numbers on them? If not, how can you tell an OEM fender from a reproduction? I have a new fender that came with my bike, but I don't know if it is OEM. It's beautiful and fairly heavy.

Should clean up nice. A few other vendors are dratv and nevc. I prefer to stay away from chp unless it's a last resort. Just my preference.

OEM is typically denser with better quality materials used as well as better quality control.

Why avoid CHP? is it price or quality that you don't like?

Before I get started on the bike I plan on doing lots of research. The bike shows 4,700 miles on the speedo. The motor is leaking oil. I would classify the condition of the motor as worn and tired. I have yet to do a compression test as I don't have that equipment yet.

The 70cc Lifan with the 4 spd auto shift has caught my eye. Any input on this? Is it a good engine/tranny combo? ok? or Junk? I do not want to go to a larger displacement for my own reasons. This combo, with the correct harness would accomplish 4 things for me. New engine/tranny, 12v conversion, a 4 speed auto shift and a wiring harness that I will need anyway. I am not planning on a concourse restoration at this point. This bike will not be abused, and I don't want to go very fast. I am 65 and grandchildren are on the way, but none born yet.

I don't know what it would cost to have my original motor and transmission rebuilt assuming there is someone who would do that, but this replacement seems less costly.

I am guessing Honda does not make new engines, at least not that I found.

Still in the research phase,
Chris

Hey Chris I’m in Florida also,,( Jacksonville) I picked up a bike in worst condition then yours and did a “keep original paint” fix up to it …in my opinion I would keep yours the original paint and rebuild the original motor,,, again just my opinion….I never posted pics or did a thread on this site of the job I did but here’s some before and after pics. your paint looks to be better then mine so I think yours would look way better.. I’ve said this before but remember “ there only original paint once” and you can still buy the red headlight buckets from Honda...

I wish I could keep the original paint but someone drilled two holes, one between the D & A, the other right in the middle of the N , on the right side. I guess they mounted something at some point. Those holes will drive me nuts if I don’t get rid of them. The paint looks better in the pics than in person. Still in the planning and evaluating stage.

That's an easy fix for a welder. Take the battery tray and gas tank and even thje carb off and have a welder fill them! Red is easy to cover up with rattle can ruby red lacquer Duplicoler from Autozone. I painted a sandblasted K1 ct70 silver base and then the ''candy red'' with it in my back yard 8 years ago and still looks great to this day. Don't talk yourself out of doing the bike right. Just a little touch up afterward... Little dab of hwp101 silver base and as many coats of the candy lacquer red needed to match, with a Q Tip!🤣

Thanks, I have nothing but time. Had not thought of having the holes welded. I like that suggestion.

Looking for lift ideas for after my engine tranny eval. I want to buy one before I need it.

I am thinking if I lift the bike by the center, I will be able to remove parts except for the engine. Can I lift the bike by the engine? or should I keep the skid plate on and lift by the skid plate? Any thoughts on this and recommendations are appreciated. If I lift it on it's wheels I won't be able to take the wheels off.

Space is limited for me so a full size MC lift would be overkill.

So far, I see these. I have a small dolly that can fit under the one without wheels:
