Hole in clutch cover.

Was tackling the oil spinner cleaning the other day. As I progressed, it started looking like someone had come before me. Due to my laser focus to the job at hand...OK..due to my total lack of observation ..it seems my case cover has had a hole repaired in it. The repair appears to be a good one as far as I know. What I'm really curious about is how the hole was created. Don't most covers just crack if they take a hit? Or was the damage caused by some internal explosion? Here's the pics.

No idea what caused the hole. That said, it appears to have been reasonably well TIG welded. As long as there's no oil leak, I'd metalfinish & repaint the outside...and call it a successful repair.
