Honda Chaly CF70

Hi All

I have a few questions about my Honda Chaly - Its a 1978 6V - I have owned the bike for around 2 years. Its mostly stock and has been a dream to ride. However over the last 2 months it developed a back fire on deceleration.

I completed the following
- Carb cleaned (by me). Then cleaned a second time by a mechanic that had an ultra sonic cleaner
- Changed the airlifter
- Replaced the seal going into the head
- Checked exhaust for holes and found x2 tiny pin holes that i repaired and then i cleaned the exhaust

Result? - Still backfiring

The plug looks like its running rich but the carb seems tuned. 2 turns out! It can be difficult to start but i new plug starts it easy first time.

I then saw a very interesting video on YouTube of a trail90 in America that had almost exactly the same issue and the guy recommended changing the condenser. I thought what have i got to loose its a £12 part. My mechanic booked me and should have been a 1 hour job.

The issue - He went to take the flywheel off to access the condenser and the bolt had threaded. He had to tap and dye the thread to get the remover on but the crank seems to have been hit with a hammer at some point and the flywheel doesn't want to come off. The flywheel is good and stuck which means he cant access the condensor to replace it

Questions i have are

- Any suggestions on how to get the flywheel off?
- If i cant get it off what are my options? Would an ST70 6V engine fit my bike if i have no choice?
- Any other suggestions on the backfire? Can i get away with not pulling the flywheel off at the moment and try something else to get rid of the backfire

Im going to have to deal with the flywheel issue at some point but even if i can get the backfire to stop that would be a bonus. I only pleasure ride the bike in the summer so only do around 300 miles a year.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not a very good mechanic if they can't get the flywheel off. There are different types of pullers. The flywheel HAS TO come off. Points and condenser need changing. Order a better flywheel in the meantime.

Show us some pictures of the chaly. Would be helpful to know which generation you have.

This is the flywheel I have on mine. It's a denso and not the usual Hitachi and Mitsubishi found on ct70s.

Five wheel puller are like US$15. Unless the motor has been submerged in water for a few months, I’ve never seen a puller failed to remove one. I did once receive a core TRX 90 motor and the flywheel would not come off even with a puller, heat, kroil. I cut it off since it looked like the crank was also shot anyway.. your motor looks good. Get yourself a puller.

Check your valve clearances as a start. Lots of yt videos on how to do this
Sorry for late reply I was a little unwell but back to it now. I'm back to tackling the bike. Checked the values and adjusted them. Still have the popping on decel. I will have to try get the flywheel off and change the condenser. Any tips for getting a stuck flywheel off?

Thanks. I ordered another puller and will try again next week. Sorry for late reply I was a little unwell but back to it now. I'm back to tackling the bike

Where did you gets yours from? It looks brand new. Do you have a chaly CF70?

Also just an additional update. I replaced all the gaskets around the carb and managed to find a new old stock carb set. Replaced all the air mixture screw and float. Doesn't seem to have an air leak. I went back to start it today and the spark was very weak. Yellow colour to the spark and intermittent. Changed the plug and still the same. Deffo seems to point towards condenser

You have a denso flywheel, it has the ND cast into it for identification. It should have weights for timing advance like the ct70 h.

I would recommend sourcing parts for it from CMS.

The part number I have for the condenser is 30250-041-004. Points should be easy to source. I haven't checked to see what's currently available or what can cross reference. I just know I picked up the condenser when I was ordering and already paying for shipping years ago.

Here is a pic of the inside of the flywheel and stator. Started out with a turd and built this.

I would just upgrade to electronic ignition and be done with the hassle. Imo

Thanks for reply. I did have a look on CSML and did find a flywheel that looked similar but wasn't quite the same part number. I'm presuming that the CT70 will fit. I have also managed to find a crack shaft from a CF50 that I bought locally. So I think I might be ok now with parts. Time to try get the flywheel off and it's nice to know I have a backup with a spare crank and potentially a flywheel. Wish me luck. Your bike looks amazing. Great job. Here is a picture of mine
