How much is this worth?

I’m trying to talk the neighbor kid who doesn’t ride this much anymore to sell it to me, but I don’t have much of an idea of what I should offer him. It’s in rough shape, but it runs well enough to amuse small kids off-road for hours.

Yep, I was going to say $350...even before kirrbby posted $300-400. We all seem to be in close agreement with this. IMO, that's a good indicator...and good luck with your quest.

If its an original matching numbers Z-50 and still running all day, might go forjust under $500 in some parts around here. Reminds me of my 1st lil 50cc.;)

I did really well on my quest.
VIN: Z50A-140643
Engine: Z50AE-140417
Are these matching numbers? Seem to me that 226 apart is close enough. What year is the bike?
The neighbor kid is set on getting himself a Pint - one of those one-wheeled electric skateboards. I offered him a fair price for the Z50, and he offered to sell me the bike and a Suzuki Quadrunner 250 for only $50 more than my offer. The quad needs a valve job, so I gave that project to my 17yo son who should have it running in short order.
I’m not going to tear the bike down to nuts and bolts and have it sit in a storage bin for 9 years like I’ve done with my CT70. This bike runs, and I want to keep it going as a rider. As you can tell by the pics, it needs a decent amount of work to achieve that status. But I’m very happy with my extremely dirty and oily addition...

My buddy got a blue one in June of 69 for his birthday,it had to be a silver tag. After my dad saw it I'm convinced thats what made them get one for me . I'd would have jumped on that deal as well, they just don't turn up that often. Good score!

My tank is still usable, but has seen much better days. One of the metal frame tabs that the front of the tank mounts to has been gone for a long time, as well as the rubber mounts that go on the tabs. Can anyone with a K1 post a pic here of the tabs as they’re suppose to look, and add a pic of the mount slots on the tank as well? Thanks in advance!

Congrats on the bike, yours is way more complete and in better shape than mine was. I repaired it back to a roller, and am about 75% done rebuilding the engine.

Here are a couple pics from an original tank and one of an aftermarket. Didn't have any pics of the Tabs on the frame, but OEM Rubbers for the old style are still available, well they were at least when I bought some last year.

@Texan Thanks for the tank pics! It really helps to see what they’re supposed to look like. Do the tabs on your frame point out horizontally? I’ve found frame pics of late K1 and K2 tabs that are the cylinders and they are oriented that way. I’m missing the left tab and the right tab is pointed almost vertical. I have a friend who welds and I’ll probably have him put on some custom late K1 style tabs. They seem much more robust and I’m expecting abuse from those who will ride this most often

Are the holes for the tail light bracket threaded, or are they just for a bolt & nut to secure to? That half of the mount is long gone from my bike, so I will need to fabricate and weld on a new piece of steel to serve that purpose and am hoping for it to look somewhat original.

Z50s are not my strong suit. That said, I've restored a few and have restored a few hard tail frames in the past 2-3 years. The ceremonial handlebar dents accompany a bent, or broken, steering stop. IMO, the Z50 steering stop is too fragile.

Two type of front tank mounts: round and flat. I've no idea which SNs are supposed to have which type. I match the replacement to the surviving original. Do note: the mounts are positioned asymmetrically R-to-L. Source the new mounting rubber then center the tank, before committing your new tank mounting post(s) in permanent weldment(s).

Straightening the tank-mounted "ears" is a trial-and-error process. Vise grips, of various denominations and a rubber, or plastic, mallet are about all the tools you'll need...or can use for this. As for removing the fork/handlebar dents, no easy solution. The ideal tool is a stud gun (designed for this purpose) and a slide hammer...kinda pricey for a single tank repair. It's possible to partially dolly-out the dents, via the filler; you'll have to improvise the dolly. It's also possible to tack weld, or braze, screws to the dented area, then use them to pull out most of it. Brazing is less invasive, if you have that option. For this location, the best filler material is body lead, if you can get it and know what you're doing. At the very least, it can be used to decrease the total amount (and thickness) of plastic filler needed.

You have an early k1. Still has some leftover k0 parts which are pricey. The longtail flywheel cover is a few bills easy. Does your muffler say "Pat Pend " or Pat pending #######"?

The early frames had flat slots for the rubber cushions on the front tank mount. Around frame 174xxx they went to the round pins for the front mount.

The taillight mount should be an L shape. You can source that from aftermarket. Later frames used the ski jump shape mount.
