Well I got the trail 70s both reliable an running great so I figured it was time to get the daughter a z50.
Been looking for another junk box deal like my last trail 70. Found one today for the right price. The guy had stripped apart to repaint an repair engine and the restore was downhill from there.
Bike is a 69 with original engine, said it ran when he bought it but when he got it home it wouldn’t start an something about he installed a larger spark plug busted cylinder head ect…… so anyways he went an got another z50 engine an then ripped bike apart to get painted an repair second engine. Got a botch paint job an it’s been in boxes since. This will be my first z50 but as with my last two bikes I know lilhonda will be the place for anything I need.

Welcome back Chrisj.
I'm sure you'll have that Z scootin along in no time.
How old is you're daughter. Old enough to work a wrench?

After a tally of parts it looks like I’m short both wheel hubs an brakes housings and the seat frame. The paint job on this thing is horrible they sprayed over everything. It looks like most of the head frame sticker is under a layer of paint is there anything other than month/year I should try to retrieve off of it?

Look to see if your vin tag has rivets holding it on...black tag. If not, it's most likely a silver tag bike. The silver tag has no useful info and can be scrapped and replaced. If it's a black tag...it should be saved if it's savable.

You just saved me some time!!!!! I looked an there is no holes for rivets just some residue left from glue. The frame has a 20xxxx stamped in it, one of the engines is 19xxxx an the other is 17xxxx. The engine ripped apart is the 19xxxx vin so I am guessing the man I purchased was correct about that being the original engine?

Tough call on the tag- usually a silver tag has flat tab gas tank mounts, yours has the round pins. Whats more of the frame number? Look at the back side of the rear axle plate where the serial number is stamped, can you read and post that number? What does the frames taillight mount look like? How about the numbers on underside of the rear gas tank mount under the rubber pad? It could be one of the last silver tags or the first of the black's. My black tag has a date of 9-69 with matching frame and tank stamps of 8-28-69. The original engine is 5500+ lower than the frame

Here is a photo of it before it was torn apart, I will check for the tank numbers tomorrow. I haven’t really got a chance to examine it too much.
That yellow looks awesome, I plan to paint this yellow/cloud silver I just need to find a paint code of the yellow.

If the paint on your head tag is from a rattle can you might be able to boil it in hot water for awhile to remove the paint. It shouldn’t remove the factory black.coloring.. where I work has a hot tank machine that cleans transmission parts and cases..ive put forks and frames in it that were rattle can painted and when you pull it out and blow it with high pressure air it will peal and bubble off all the rattle can paint but not harm the orignal paint..the only chemical added to the hot tank is a special soap that keeps the parts from rusting so I don’t think that helps remove the paint..it’s mostly the hot water and the pressure sprayers.

I don’t think there is even a sticker under it, I used a knife on it an it looks like they just painted over the glue left from original tag. Gary called it with the rivet holes, I looked in tube to make sure they were not filled with anything an there isn’t any so I will just replace it with a silver tag. I am going to sand blast wheels soon an try to track down some hubs an brake assembles.

Here is a photo of the tanks underside, I don’t see any numbers, Is that a rubber pad the number are stamped into? This thing has quite the coat of paint on it lol. It looks like I will have to have the hangers slots fixed one is pretty bent up.
For what I paid an getting a extra engine with carb an all I am pretty satisfied. I guess this built will be more of a replace than repair when it comes to parts.

No the numbers are stamped right into the metal. Maybe earlier tanks don't have the stamp or oem replacement tanks didn't have a date.

Looks like a black tag mount. PM me your frame number if you don't want to broadcast it to the world

I split case last night to start cleaning an polishing case, clutch needs to be rebuilt and I noticed the screw to hold the shift drum stopper arm was about to fallout. Looks like primary gear or clutch basket has been rubbing on arm for a bit. Also looks like someone previously tried to drill out crank shaft to remove flywheel or something. Luckily I still have to tools I used on my 70s an got it out no problem.
