Import fees due on delivery

Let me start by saying I'm not trying to stir up a political conversation. I don't care about any of that crap or President ABC is better than President XYZ or Policy 1 is better than Policy 2 or any of that BS, in this venue. It's a motorcycle forum, FFS.

A friend of mine ordered a camper part from Canada for about $300. On delivery, he received a call from the shipping company saying that he would need to pay nearly $170 to cover the import fees (yes, tariffs) in order to receive delivery. A real shock.

Today, searching ebay for parts that I can only find in Singapore or Thailand, I see a new banner across the top of my phone's ebay webpage saying something very similar that import fees will need to be paid at the time of delivery.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to know ahead of time what these fees will be. Only that you'll need to pay "something" extra to complete delivery and that "something" may be significant based on my friends experience.

I mention this only for awareness- to keep an eye out for warnings (or not) such as ebay's new banner, as some of these old Honda parts are increasingly difficult to source inside the US. You may find yourself with a surprise at the tail end of something that you order and wait several weeks to receive.

All that being said, if someone knows where I can get a set of Honda C200 rear red shocks (short, approx 250mm/9,5") in new or near new condition in the US, please lmk :)

I recently bought 4 fork reflectors for a k-1 ct70 from Japan the price was decent so when I purchased the same tariff thing popped up on eBay..I was thinking $8 or maybe $15,,, the ship company sent me a message stating that I needed to pay $39.00 or the items would be shipped back in 5 days..I was under the impression that the other countries would be paying the tariffs not us? The real sucky thing is when the reflectors arrived they were the new style with the black plastic backing and sides,,, they had a totally different part number as advertised and the ones shown in the eBay pic has the aluminum backing and sides,,,I contacted seller and eBay and the seller accepted the return that i just shipped back ,,im just now wondering how and if the tariff $ will be returned to me? I’ll keep all posted when the time comes..bottom line is the tariff law is going to drive the prices up big time especially when the suppliers run out of stock and have to buy there new stock with tariffs attached..I think Japan is only 15% all china parts are going to be even more….

How do you pay the shipping company? Do you have to give them your credit card info or something directly, or does ebay handle it?

My buddy that ordered from Canada contacted the seller and thankfully the seller ate the cost, but also commented to him that it will probably put them out of business if they can't sell to folks just over the border.

The shipping company DHL express was who I paid and I paid with PayPal also had option to use my credit card....I’m wondering if they charge a fee for collecting the money plus the tariff fees? It seems to me like they would have to make some money for the hassle of collecting? It’s all new to me but would be nice to know what up for sure..

Japan post won't ship to u.s. Only option is $$$ for DHL, FedEx two day air. Plan wisely.

Im not sure if CMS is tariff free or not.

Was reading through some of the verbiage on ebay and it says the shippers do collect something additional for the hassle of collecting, typically $5 to $30.

A Singapore ebay seller tells me in our DMs that his price has the tariffs built in. “Direct to your door -hassle free”. But…. That blue banner on ebay says its my responsibility -at time if delivery-…. Whom do you trust on this?

The tariffs have nothing to do with the seller ,they are added by the country that the item is imported into ,therefore ,the “Singapore seller “has nothing to do with the US tarriffs ,but he might be saying that any tariffs that he might of paid to import the item to himself is already added to his price .

I suspect, though it has not been verified, that if I purchase a part from the US, and have it shipped to me in Canada, the tariff will be added by Canadian Customs. If I then refuse to accept, because of this, then the returned part will be tariffed by the US, to be paid by the original vendor. Anybody aware of this?

The importer (you and me) pay the tariff. The originating country and the exporter play no role in the tariff. When the purchased item arrives in the US it is held in Customs until the importer (you and me) pay the tariff to the US treasury. The process would be same in any other country. The main reason why you are seeing this now is because there used to be an exemption from tariffs on all purchases (imports) under $600. That exemption has been repealed thus everything is now subject to the applicable tariff. A tariff is a sales tax applied to affected imports.

I got this email today from one of the places I buy jdm parts from:

USA Customers - Tariffs & Duties

As you likely know, the US Government changed their stance on tariffs and duties, and eliminated “de minimis”, which was the provision that allowed shipments of less than $800 to enter the US tariff and duty free. Now all shipments, regardless of value, are subject to tariffs and duties, along with applicable custom brokerage charges. These changes have lead to a lot of confusion and frustration, and on social media there are horror stories of recipients of packages having to pay large fees before the package will be handed over.

Many believe that for parts ordered from Japan, a 15% IEEPA tariff for items made in Japan applies, which is absolutely true, however a 25% Section 232 Auto Parts tariff can also apply, bringing the effective tariff rate to 40%. These charges can lead to quite a surprise and unexpected cost, and the carrier must collect it prior to releasing the package.

The bottom line is it’s going to cost way more to restore and repair our old Hondas weather we use Chinese or Japan parts….the only good thing I can think is maybe the ones we currently own will be worth more $$?

Sent reflectors back through eBay,, got refund for the items, shipping, and taxes but nothing for the $38.60 in tariffs,,contacted eBay and they said there’s nothing they can do other then send the seller an email saying I’m requesting $38.60 more from them for the tariff fee, I dont think that they will agree to pay that $$ back but we will see…remember they sent me the wrong part number and a different pictured item,,,so the government is now basically getting free tariff money? I wounder what that will all add up to yearly from all the people like me in my case getting screwed..? Billions or trillions? Anyone with info please pipe in…

You could try contacting DHL support, or since you paid through PayPal perhaps they could intervene as well?
If some portion of the cost was for DHL's additional overhead of collecting the tariff you wouldn't get a full refund but maybe partial. Worth a shot.
Quite a lot of extra hassle, for sure.

Received a bill in the mail from FedEx. Parts had been delivered probably two weeks ago. Bill was very complete, seven pages in total with invoice, import docs, mailing label, cbp for 7501, customs declaration from seller.

This was for brand new parts. I have not received anything for used parts. However, that may be due to when my last purchase of used parts was.
