Hi all. This is my first post here on lilhonda. Last year, I bought my very first motorcycle, and my first real project. Its a 1981 Honda Passport with the DA01E- 70cc engine. I had it running last year around the time I bought it. A friend of mine helped out. The engine would run, however only if my throttle was totally maxed out. (it would pop little wheelies because of this) Because the throttle and the carburetor are linked directly together, I assumed it was a problem with my jetting or the needle and the slidey-thing that controls how much air is sucked in through the carb. I never fiddled with any jetting. 4 carburetors later, I decided I should take the engine apart with my friend and his grandfather. We took the whole head off, and the points cover side. There was noticeable gouging on the inside where the timing chain runs to the head, which we ignored. After we found nothing loose or broken we put the engine back together, and it never ran after that. I continued to work, life went on, whatever.
This brings us to a couple days ago, when I saw an ad on Facebook. 8 engines, all honda cubs and family, for 200 dollars. I jumped on the offer, since I had been dreaming of riding my passport this summer all winter, kind of in hopes that I can just fit one of them on my bike and be done with it in the laziest way possible. Not the case, which is okay. I needed to write something like this since I've seen how helpful other posts on this website are.
Ill cut to the chase and give ALL of the funny numbers on my engines I bought. A few are tucked away so this will definitely take me a little while. (it took me a while)
My engine, pulled off of my 81 passport:
DA01E-
2124993
CL125SE
1110685 (that first 1 was stamped a bit far from the other numbers but it was there so its here on my list)
(all I think I know is that this engine is a enduro dirtbike engine from the 70s)
C70ME-
106404
has an electric starter, I think this engine ran within the last couple years, it wasn't nasty
XL70E-
1108492
I don't know much about this engine.
CL100E-
1215747
this one is pretty bare but has some guts inside
CB125SE
1208754
the guy I bought the engines off of was rebuilding this one, but lost interest after realizing a thread at the very end of the head is "munched". (I agree with this term its pretty bad) however, I have another head (and cylinders) that will fit this and are not munched. In short: this one is nice and shiny.
CT200E
100618
this engine is from like the 60s its nasty and has peanut butter inside of it. Worst condition engine of the lot.
No.S90E
492849
This engine is the only running engine I have that I know for sure will run.
CT90E-
222896
Has an entire bin just for all its parts/guts. I haven't dug through the bin but there are a lot of labeled baggies so I'm thinking of putting it aside for later. Its an engine I'm keeping.
Those are all of the engines I have and all of their case #'s. I appreciate any and all information.
I am 19. All the automotive experience I've had is accumulative. I took automotive class for 2 yrs in HS but that's really it. I have no special tools that I might need. I have a pretty big air compressor and basic tools, like ratchets and such. I was recommended an impact driver and particular japanese phillips head and flathead bits by the seller.
I also technically bought a couple of frames, I think c100 and c90 frames? that the seller was considering chopping up and making something from them. I've been pretty interested in that as well, and I might return and get those too if I can find a good place to store them. Two of the frames were identical and in good condition, I'm more interested in those.
I will attach pictures if asked. Thanks all.
