Mikuni VM26 vs TM-MNJ22

Well, I haven't dyno'd anything but I recently replaced the VM26 with an MJN22 on the Honda Nice 142cc. This engine is configured with a stock, but ported Honda Nice head, a z40 cam, and flat-topped piston in 54mm mated with a 62mm crankshaft. The rest of the engine is stock.

I spent some time on Sunday messing with the jetting until I had the MJN dialed in as I expected it to be. Clearly, this carb is better. Off-throttle, overall throttle response, and a significant change from Mid-WOT have improved enough to really notice. Having had VM26's as the primary carb of choice, I'm very familiar with jetting them, so I'm certain I had this dialed in quite well. The MJN was also pretty easy to get right, although the rich indicator on the plug is tougher since it atomizes fuel so well, so you need to read only the outer ring edge of the plug.

So if you are considering the purchase of a carb, it is worth considering the MJN series if you have some extra cash lying around. I happen to also have one of these on a completely stock Honda Nice and it is a very smooth runner and has absolutely no deadspots or hiccups anywhere in the throttle range. I'm not intending to go off and replace the carbs on my other bikes, but it certainly warrants consideration if you are building something new. Another thing to consider are the carb boots...they are a bit of an odd size.

Strictly speaking, that's not quite true. You S.O.T.P. dynoed it and you're a qualified technician.

I'm not the least bit surprised that the MJN22 outperforms the VM26, especially in this application. I expect that a VM22 would work better on this motor, as well. IMO, minimum requirements for a VM26 would be a 26mm intake port (28mm would be better) with an appropriately-sized valve to match and 160cc displacement. With stock valves in this head, 22mm is all the carb that can be used. That said, all other parameters the same, I expect that the MJN will outperfom a VM...it's just a more efficient design.
