My brother’s Frankenbike

My brother bought this 71 KO the other day and sent me the attached pics. He says the PO told him it ran but was running too rich. My brother hasn’t been able to get it started. He’s the impulsive type, so not a lot of checking things out before a purchase was made. That said he got it for less than what he could sell the frame for...

I’ve been scratching my head looking at the pics ever since trying to figure out what my brother even has. It looks like a goofy mix of OEM and aftermarket... possibly converted to 12v, huge aftermarket tranny, maybe electric start, Mountain Dew bottle gas tanko_O, 72 or later top tree, and a host of other oddities. Can anyone identify what engine & tranny that is? Kirrby this bike was/is relatively close to you...any recognition?

For those who have made the 12V conversion, what battery do you use? My brother bought a correct model (KO) gas tank which doesn’t jive with the battery that came with the bike. Just wondering who/where to point him to. I know nothing about 12V conversions, but I imagine there’s a battery out there that fits into the stock area? Thanks

As far as I am aware, there's no off-the-shelf 12V battery that fits a CT70 battery carrier. FYI, the later K0/HK0 bikes got the same battery box as the K1...the smaller version that has a plastic liner, instead of the rubber pads. IDK if it's possible to squeeze two 6V SLA batteries into an early K0 battery box, or not. If they'll fit, you could wire them in series (P-N-P-N) to get 12v.

I’m still researching this 12v issue...if you have a 12v system in your bike, how are you providing power? A 6v battery with a conversion kit? Just wondering how those who have completed this mod have made it all fit under the seat...

I looked high and low for a pic of mine, but couldn't find one. I have a 12v battery in a K1 frame, using a 90's CT70 battery box, a steel CT70 tank, and a K1 seat. It's tight, but fits, and works, with a little fudgin.
My bike's in storage, otherwise I'd snap a pic.

Finally back at my desktop machine. Here's a pic of my daily rider...12v/full-wave reg/rec unit, electronic lighting control module & oversized 3.5L tank. This is the limit of how many olives can be stuffed into this, particular, jar and way tighter than a CT70 with a stock tank (~1 inch shorter) and any stock-type reg/rec.

Thanks Kirby & Bob! My brother is out on a rig in the Gulf (drill rig paramedic) currently but this is good news for when he gets back this weekend. (y)

Do you have info on battery size for this conversion .

The battery in Bobs bike is a type that's made for wheelchairs, or electric "Amigo" type scooters. He custom built the battery box so he could gain space for the oversize...also custom (I think)...fuel tank.
