Hi , I love Honda bikes, this is my first time posting on here, I have tinkered with honda bikes for the last few years, all shapes and sizes, but I have found a special love for the vintage 70 and 50 honda bikes, the reason i am posting is to get a few pointers, i Bought a 1972 trail 70 K1 with 2400 miles on it and in very good condition about a year ago, I just got through rebuilding the carb and fired it up and rode it around, I don't know if I do not have the carb adjusted right or no but it has no power at all, idles great but has no power. Do i need to do a compression test? What should the compression be ? Do These bikes have timing that needs to be set ? Anyone know how to adjust the carb correctly?

The bike just seems not to want to rev up very much under a load ( Bogg ) It will not go over 15 miles an hour !!!!

Please any help would be greatly appreciated !! :77:

I would look at the main jet clean it again clean out the main hole with a jet cleaner or small piano wire also clean the small holes on the side of the tube that holds the main jet, then make sure the points are set right, as the points wear they close and retard the timing. good luck hope this helps.

Grant,

Thank you very much for the insight, I will check the main jet and all other components of the carb to make sure I did not miss anything. Do you know how to properly tune this carb ( it is a stock Carb for the 72 K1 ) ( The two screws on the side ). I will also look into the points wear as you were saying. Should I check compression?

Any other ideas ?

I will also post some pictures of it tomorrow. Thanks again for the help !!!

The larger screw with the spring sets the idle speed, the smaller one sets the idle mixture the engine gets richer when you turn it in, and it will get leaner when you turn it out. screw it in till it lightly bottoms then turn it out 1 1/2 turns that will get you close. If this doesn't help then take a compression test.

Thank you both, I will tune it tomorrow and let you know how it goes !!! also, does anyone know how much compression these little bikes are supposed to have or at what point it is time for some rings ?

Just to double check, I put the gauge on and kick it over about 4 times and see what the reading is and let it sit for a few minets to check for leak down. Does this sound correct?

Thank You Grant !!!

Well I did not get a chance to do a compression test or to check the points yet, but I did fire it up, do some carb adjustments i learned on here and got it running much better and going 25mph instead of 15mph !! Here are a few pics, It is not the most pretty thing, but it is all honda original and I love it !!!!!

Thanks for all the Help so far

Well I still have not had the time to check out the CT70 yet, It has been crazy at work, But I was cruising around on Craigs list and found a 86 z50R, that is in mint condition from the original owner. I have a 85 in mint condition and love the little bike, so I figured what the hell, might as well have 2 !!!! Here are a few pic's after i picked it up, not cleaned yet. I am starting to wonder how many of these bikes I am going to end up with !!!! :scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter:

Well I checked the compression and it made it to 140 psi after about 6 good kicks, so I think that is good, I took the side cover off, pulled the flywheel, cleaned everything, set the points gap to .015 and put everything back together and now there is no spark ?????? Points are supposed to be closed at the F and open at the T correct ???

they start to open at the F and are adjusted on the T.did you ensure that your piston is all the way up?sound like the points wire lead is touching something or grounding out.there are two tiny plastic washers that need to be exactly where they were too.
