Great forum, I've been lurking for a few weeks. I recently picked up a 76 CT70 and an 81 Z50. Cheers.

Welcome aboard!

Looks like you've got a couple of nice bikes to start your adventure/odyssey into the world of classic Honda minis.

I'm very excited for spring to come. I sold my Ninja to make this dream happen.

I actually took your advice on the 20w50 oil and did an oil change on each bike. They seem a bit harder to start, but it is cold here, even if these bikes live in my basement.

Want to see some déjà vu ? You must be local ,that was a z50 I sold a few years ago to an older kid .Its a hodgepodge of parts ,but it did run and ride well but was not worth restoring .I hope you didn't pay anything near the asking price .IMG_0003.jpgIMG_0004.jpg

I am in Coniston .The seat was ratty and had a broken pan ,the bars were bent but not terrible ,the carb was good when I sold it ,but the guys mother called me 4 or 5 months after I sold it and said he couldn't get it going ,I offered to help but the guy worked night shift and was very hard to meet up with .I tried several times over 6 months or so ,then I just gave up on him .That bike was part of a little experiment for me ,I had another virtually identical and I wanted to see which one made the most money ,I did a descent restore on the other ,yours was ugly but a very good rider at the time .There was more profit in the other bike ,but yours sold much quicker ,with much less work and hassle ,so it was pretty much a wash .

Right on. I'm in copper cliff.
I'd love to meet up some time if you're interested.
I bought this bike from Greg knowing it was a hodge-podge bike -- as long as I could ride it I was happy.
But if you have any expertise and would be interested in teaching or hanging out come good weather let me know.

That's cool. What if I supply the beer and do all the work? I did some searching and see that you're very knowlegable -- I'm also starting a bee hive if honey interests you at all haha

Also, where do you ride around here?

20W50 is too heavy for winter riding, temps below 60F/15C. I base oil viscosity on peak operating temp and 20W50 needs 75-80C, minimum, to flow properly. And that's cutting it close. Below 85C oil temp, I can feel a slight difference in engine power...due to the flow resistance of the thick oil. In near-freezing temps (or below) I doubt that oil temps can be raised that high, especially with a stock motor and offroad riding.

Be aware, I am a dedicated fair weather rider and now 99% of my miles (the metric system doesn't exist on our side of the US-Canada border) are over the road, and in the low 50-55mph/80-90kmh range. On a hot summer day, 95-100C is what I see on the dipstick thermometer.

20W50 does happen to be about as close as one gets to straight 30W and with adequate zinc content, in 2017. However, the specs called for 10W40 in cold weather. You will likely be happier with that, until summer temps return.
