New to CT70 introduction

Hey there, New guy to the CT70 world. I have been a motorcycle fiend since 4 years old and have rebuilt quite a few, (xs650, RT1B, Zuma, CA50, KZ440) My latest journey is a 69-71 (I haven't run VIN yet) CT70 I picked up at an estate sale. Bike is in absolutely fantastic shape to have been sitting under a deck for who knows how long. It is all there with the exception of the throttle tube. I was looking at switching from the internal throttle assembly to a Magura quarter turn throttle and I didn't know if anyone else had done so and what cable they may have used. I plan to use this as a pitbike at the dragstrip on race weekends, if anyone has any input or recommendations please send them my way. Thanks for having me!

Your bike does look quite nice, and complete. It's a early "silver tag K0 CT70". Being a early vin# makes it a desirable variation of CT70. The problem with that is that any deviation from stock will hurt the value of the bike...if that matters to you. There are quite a few parts that are specific to the early vin bikes. The black plastic levers are one of those parts. (2)
Purists will cringe if you start making too many changes/mods.

I think this cable will work...but I'm not sure, and I'm not familiar with that throttle. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Thanks for the warm welcome Kirrbby. I bought it at an estate sale for $500 on Saturday, I'm 27 with a love for older bikes and have always loved the trail 70 and 90 so when I found this one I had to jump on it. The rear brake hand lever is broke so I'm replacing that. The front brake lever is metal which I suppose was broken and then replaced at one point or another. I plan to leave this bike completely stock or at the very least keep all the stock parts put away in the shop. I doubt I will ever sell this thing as it is something I've always wanted and I can use it as a pitbike for years and years.

Congrats! For the money, you bagged a screaming deal. Circa 2019, half a G-note doesn't buy much, A complete, running, CT70 of any year should bring roughly double that, minimum. At silver tag K0, in this condition...well...let's just say that they don't exactly grown on trees. You've got a good bike to keep. No doubt, it'll do noting but increase in value over the years.

Adding an external throttle assembly should be easy enough; it's easy enough to remove if you decide to go back to stock/original. Spend the bucks to get a quality unit and you should get better return action...as opposed to "CT70 cruise control", a.k.a. the notoriously lazy/sticky original. It's not impossible to make the stock original work properly, just not the easiest task. Retain all of the original twist grip throttle pieces; they're better quality than the newer stuff and nicely broken-in by now. Only caveat with a quick-action throttle on a bike this size is that it can be a little too twitchy when riding over uneven surfaces, with the bike pitching wildly.

I knew I couldnt go wrong at that price just didnt know what kind of deal I had gotten until I started researching and posted here. I'm definitely going to keep my factory throttle equipment just put away. I have a spare Magura quarter turn throttle (which I use on my Dragbike) which should work fine just need a cable that is the right length, I may build my own. I plan to use this strictly in the pits at the dragstrip so hopefully it wont be too twitchy.

Congrats on this early K0 Silver Tag find! How Lucky for your first Trail bike!:)

The factory paint looks like it could still polished up nicely. You'll find that ST parts in good shape are extremely hard to find and quite valuable. I'm curious as to the mileage on it but its a beauty in my book. It's a collectors Dream.;)

Mileage I believe is 4529 I know for sure its in the 4K range

Great find and a screaming deal. That paint looks like it will come back to life with some work. I have a buddy that has a 71K0 that was in very similar shape as yours and it cleaned up very well.

Read here and it lists the wax and the things used to clean it up.

Thanks for the link, I polished up the chrome with some diet coke and aluminum foil and it came out very nicely.
