New Winter project.

Got my carb rebuild kit + new floats. This carb never had floats from the first time I opened it? I had previously cleaned it. It was nasty. One pic of the filter screen to give you an idea. All parts from DRatv.

Those old OEM carbs can be a real chore to clean and restore. Leaving them soaking in Berrymans for too long will take off the zinc coating. I always try to get all the Honda OEM stuff that I can, because some of the aftermarket stuff, like gaskets, doesn't fit right. Don't bother trying to clean the needle float valve and get it working properly...it wont!lol. Just replace it and its seat. Getting new screws really adds the final touch to making it look good. The idle screw and A/F screw can be wire wheeled and look good again.
A good thing to remember is that the screws that hold on the plate to the fuel screen are the same diameter as the petcock plate screws, but they are longer and using the same length screws will help insure not to strip those petcock threads out when tightening.
From your pic, it looks like you have a 533A model carb. Its jets should be #35 and #58main. Because of todays gas, you will probably need to up the main to a #60 or #62. If possible, run pure fuel or a stabilizer, because ethanol wreaks havoc on all the rubber seals and fuel lines.

Thanks for the reply. I acquired this awesome set of "JIS" machine screws, family hand me down! Which I use regularly. Not sure where to get berrymans up here but I'll look a little harder. A limited dip in pine sol and carb cleaner is what I had available. Cleaned up pretty good. Yup there was a #35 and a #58 main in there. Used everything in the kit. Had a new needle float valve, seat and washer. Also a new a/f screw and idle mixture screw. New kit had a #35 and a #65 main.

FYI...these castings are zinc alloy. Most chemicals and media blasting...including wet-blasting (a.k.a. "vapor honing") will change the cast surface, permanently. Carb cleaner is one of the few "hot" solvents that won't affect the surface finish, including the rainbow-like iriditing, if it survived.

This carb doesn't look like it started out badly, at all. You might be surprised to see what half of them look like, as-received/"before".

Looks like yours turned out very nicely.

I have heard awhile ago that putting these parts in ketchup cleans them up too. Never tried it,but I might on a z50 petcock I have.

That may be true, ketchup is acidic. It does a number on copper, removing the oxidation. Be forewarned, zinc carb castings are temperamental...they're brittle, easily damaged by heating and chemically-reactive. Even Pinesol will etch and permanently discolor & change the surface finish.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of Berryman carb cleaner. It's (ob)noxiously stinky...and...IMHO, Solder Seal brand immersion carb cleaner is more effective, with far less odor.

It might be okay to clean the inside surfaces, of the float bowl at least, with a mildly acidic cleaner...and that could be ketchup. The thick viscosity would certainly be helpful. Someone will have to volunteer to play lab rat/researcher/crash test dummy, to test the theory.

Thank you. I’m sure it’ll go great as long as I don’t make any New Years resolutions! Hate breaking them! Hope you have a great 2020 Aswell.

Still a little way to go on the mini. But it is coming together. I like to break it down into smaller units and do them one at a time. Then put everything together. Seems to work for me.

Waiting on another small parts order. Should be here Monday or so? Decals, throttle tube and a front brake light switch.

Cheers!

Got some parts earlier this week. No time to install them. Electrical is mostly done. Buttoned up the headlight. Switched DC components all work. Horn good, taillight good, front brake switch/light good, rear brake switch/light good, plugged in the engine and I get a neutral light. New grips installed with rubber cement. New throttle pipe and cable installed. Used the handlebar control switches/mounts from my 1980 parts bike.

Oh yeah, also installed new front brake cable, hooked it all up and tested it.

Front end is looking good, my friend... moi, I'm drinking beer and watching football on the 65" curved screen, got a big ol' batch of spicy hot homemade chicken burrito mix sitting on the range, already cooked and just waiting for some knuckehaids to arrive, LOL. Fresh ingredients as always, including Jalapenos, onion, vine-ripened tomatoes, shredded cheese, sour cream, guacamole from fresh avocados, etc., etc. Added fresh key lime juice & cilantro salsa to the mix as well, and it tastes PRETTY DARNED GOOD straight outta the pot, 10-4???

OH, HELL, THE VIKINGS RETURN FOOL JUST GAVE THE BALL TO THE NINERS ON THE 10-YARD LINE... PFFFFFFFT. :cautious:

GOOD THING I HAVE NO MONEY RIDING ON IT... NEVER BEEN A GAMBLING MAN, I WORK TOO HARD FOR MY MONEY, LOL...

Sounded like good food and good friends yesterday? Looks like your team won? No football being played here right now! It's cold as can be! About minus -23* Celsius daytime, gets colder at night around minus -30* ish! Then add in the wind chill and it's downright unbearable to be out there.

Just tucked in the warm basement working on my mini project.

Got to the decals today. Chose the 1976 version for the colours and the block lettering. Side badges are K3 vintage.

That's why I currently live in southeastern Arizona, 300+ days of sunshine per year... and I've been through all that cold weather in my "trucking daze." I like this climate, and there are SO MANY outdoor recreation venues nearby, with heaps of offroading and dirt biking to enjoy, plus the whole adult playground known as Cochise Stronghold, there's heller world-class technical rock climbing out there and my home has a million-dollar view of the crags, domes & spires on the West Side. I love it here, man, living in this small town is like going back in time, with no traffic, no smog, no foul city attitudes, virtually no crime because the would-be perps know that even Grandma is STRAPPED with a .44 and will "blow their heads clean off" (blatant ripoff of a Dirty Harry line, LOL). :cautious:

My job is going so well, I almost have to pinch myself to make sure it's not a dream... all the higher-ups love me because I'm kickin' @$$ and making the maintenance shop right, it was an ugly clusterf#% when I arrived and now it's looking the way a shop SHOULD look, 10-4? Hell, even the mayor shakes my hand in the Walmart aisles when I see him off-duty, that's a novel experience and a refreshing change from dealing with all the corrupt scumbag politicians in the Republik of KaliMexiFornia, LOL. Here's another thing: I was cruising the WallyWorld aisles one day and saw a chick that looked pretty good, turned my head to get a view of the back yard and she had a nice semiautomatic pistol shoved behind the waistband of her jeans, LOL. Gotta love an "open carry" state, that's what keeps the crime down (unless ya live in a Big City).

Anyway, I like the progress you're making on the bike, it's good to have a winter project to keep one occupied. Right now, my LIFE is my winter project, LOL, but I believe I've FINALLY turned it around now that I have this kick@$$ gubmint job, despite the phony felony charges in Kalifornia, that f#%ng seaside ghetto dump. Like MILLIONS of others, I fled that state because it's a sinking ship, thanks to corrupt scumbag pols and traitorous sellouts to globalist trash who think their excrement doesn't STINK, AYE??? And GOOD RIDDANCE to that $h!thole & cesspool of corruption, even my best friend whose family ran the first & oldest surf shop in Coronado for 35 years wants OUT of that burg... you can Google "Coronado, CA" and see the place, then wonder why the LOCALS all wanna leave, LOL. I'm already gone, and happy to live here in Arizona...

Ya know, I just couldn't do in Kalifornia what I've done here in Arizona: own a home free & clear, no rent or mortgage, find a decent job with REAL benefits, live like a f#%ng KING because the cost of living is so low, meet cool & friendly people who are NOT all stressed out because they live in Kalifornia, etc., etc. I mean seriously, I paid $36K for this home when I bought it, paid cash and it's already worth TWICE as much with the work I've put into it. I'm sitting on a quarter-acre on a terraced hill with a MILLION-DOLLAR VIEW of the Stronghold, relatively low property taxes and utility bills, the air is fresh & clean with a million stars overhead at night, it's just a really cool place to live. Many folks don't realize that this corner of Arizona has mountain ranges that push 8000', 9000', 10,000' and even 11,000' in elevation... Mt Graham rises to 10,720' and it's not that far away, I'll go there this summer to check out the mountain lakes and the observatory. o_O

These bad@$$ ranges are known as "sky islands" because the ecology & habitats & wildlife are different from what's found below in the desert, even the high desert where I dwell. We have all kinds of deer here, but you'll find elk at higher elevations, along with a bunch of other wildlife including bobcats, cougars, coyotes, etc. We have all those other critters here, but there are MORE of them up there, LOL. Big-@$$ raptors too, gotta watch those critters if ya have small domestic animals. Anyway, I'm only sharing all this info with you in case you know folks who are thinking of relocating as I did, for whatever reason. We have $h!tloads of "snowbirds" and retirees here, due to the weather, and living in rural or semi-rural Arizona is like going back in time to a better way of life, 10-4? No lie, life is GOOD here, and with the economy strong NOW is the time to move if one is so inclined.

Just sayin' in case ya have kids who are restless, LOL, or have friends dealing with that situation... don't let those kids move to that crowded and costly Kalifornia dump, better to live in AZ and rip out to the coast now & then on vacation, as I'll do once I rack up enough hours. The freedom here is great, especially in this area where I live, way less badges giving citizens grief... the cops here are "local yokels" (trucking parlance) who focus on speeding, DUIs & domestic violence, the idiot wife-beaters who should never have gotten married in the first place. Ain't love grand??? LOL. Meh, I'm loving life here now that I'm FINALLY established for real, can't wait to buy my big ol' thumper and ride all these bad@$$ trails out here, just minutes from my home instead of hours, LOL. It might not be a mini, but I'll be sure to post pics of my adventures so alla youse riders out there in cyberspace can share the views, 10-4? And check this: at times I'll be riding with climbing gear in a pack on my back, just to pull some long moderate route at the Stronghold, WAHOO!!! :red70:

And NOW, a few pics of that adult playground known as the Stronghold, I may have posted some of these elsewhere at this site but I can't remember where, as I suffer from CRS, LOL. So here goes, enjoy yer mini tour, and keep up the good work on that project, it's already looking SWEEEEEET!!! CHEERS!!!

P.S. Arizona sunshine, dirt biking on the way in (to the West Side), outdoor adventure on bad@$$ crags, domes & spires, many with excellent & solid rock, hot climbing chicks... what's NOT to like? LOL... :yellow70:

AS ONE MOTORCYCLIST TO ANOTHER, "CHEERS, MY FRIEND!!! ROCK ON..."

How to hijack a post like Coastal Redneck:

Produce a minimum of 1100 words / 7 paragraphs about my current personal life, location, possessions, finances and lifestyle preferences.:alien: Make specific mention of what I’ve made for dinner and the f#%ng size and shape of my television.:ninja: Recount several experiences from my life history, making sure to detail offenses/grudges I CAN'T let go of and my overwhelmingly negative attitude towards ANYONE in a position of authority.:X3: Use copious amounts of emojis, 10-4, and AYE? throughout my comment(y)(y)(y). Describe in detail the bad@$$ local climate, geology, wildlife, and demographics.:pShare a briefing on the nation’s sports statistics.:barefoot: Attach random pictures of various personal items that have NOTHING to do with the nature of the original poster’s thread (who, in this case lives in Alberta, Canada).
troll.jpg 286-YO1.jpg 61NkfYt6zYL._SL1200_.jpg

THEN COMPLETE THE COMMENT IN ALL CAPS!!!

JUST TEASING!!! What would we do if you weren't here?! Just be a bunch of old nerdy men talking about our tiny......motorcycles :ROFLMAO::LOL::yellow70:

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Man has a right to spray on the Internetz while drunk, LOL.

And life is GOOD, nobody will rain on my parade, not even the almighty Airblazer... now, cue the Marty Robbins!!!

"...THE ONE THEY CALL THE BRUTE... RIDDEN BY A COWBOY IN A CONTINENTAL SUIT!!!"

When I buy a big ol' thumper here pronto, I'm gonna search every thrift shop in Cochise County until I find a Continental suit, preferably one of cheaper cut, and I'm gonna wear that suit as I tool around on the thumper, sporting my dusty leather steel-toed work boots in sartorial redneck splendor. White socks or black? Checkered? Argyle? Meh, makes no difference, and I'm WAY past caring, LOL.

While I'm dodging bullets & shotgun blasts, possibly even some rock salt from friendlier types, I'll be CRANKIN' Marty Robbins on some ghetto-rigged stereo system, and those Marty Robbins tunes will be like spiritual armor... bullets & shot & halite chunks will slide past me as I groove out, carving roadside berms & banks and poppin' wheelies in front of podunk cops, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :cautious:

Yesiree, I'm looking forward to riding that thumper, I'm essentially looking for a dirt bike which is also street legal, that way I can cruise these AZ highways & byways in search of some country gal who wears boots, jeans & a cowgirl top with a big ol' rodeo belt buckle to complete the ensemble. With me in my Continental suit and torn-up leather boots, we'll make a FINE COUPLE... and it won't hurt if her soon-to-be-dead Grandpa owns a hundred-thousand-acre ranch and she's the sole heiress, AYE??? 10-4??? "CAPISCE???" :ROFLMAO:

Love all the commentary, keep it coming!

And check it out, MountainMini just gave me a thumbs up, so stick that in yer pipe and smoke it, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :monkey:

AAAAAAH, THE REDNECK LIFE... IT'S JUST TOO COOL, LIKE GOING BACK IN TIME TO A BETTER ERA IN AMERICAN HISTORY!!! PLEASE NOTE THAT I'M NOW USING ALL CAPS, LOL. GUESS I'LL SWITCH FROM BEER TO BLOODY MARYS HERE IN A MINUTE, I WANNA TRY THIS BLOODY MARY MIXER EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT HUNG OVER... YET. ;)

LIKE PUTTING THE CART IN FRONT OF THE HORSE... AYE??? 10-4? "KA-PEESH???" CHEERS!!! :red70:

P.S. Wait, did I use enough emojis???

Seat is next. Did some clean up on it. It's a KO. Did a little vinyl repair on some small holes. It's on the long list for replacement. Just gonna get by with it for now. Probably, buy new foam and cover at that time.

Canadians, love Arizona. My, wife's relatives (+ many others) have been going there for years in the winter and love it (snowbirds). Only allowed for 6 months then they come back in the spring. Really envy the option to ride all year around!

Sometimes ya just gotta work with what ya have, even if it's NOT showroom, LOL. :cautious:

Hey, Airblazer, be sure to Google "Pemberton & Sons Aviation" and check out their awesome restoration of vintage aircraft, that family is the BOMB when it comes to making those old aircraft fly again in style, and of course they have to have the airworthiness certificate and whatever else from the FAA... I flew with Addison Pemberton one time, and it was the best flight I ever took in my life, the guy was the best natural born pilot I ever met, dude should've had wings on his shoulders when he emerged from the womb, LOL. I love flying, but I abhor commercial aviation in airborne stock cars, I'd much rather fly in an old biplane or even a wingsuit, AYE??? Maybe you haul the rich around in your job, which probably has its perks... you can bang hookers & pound 14 rum & cokes while in the air, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Anyway, Bulletproof Red69 will back me on the Pemberton claim, that whole airborne clan is special, and the restoration work they do in thousands of man-hours is truly incredible!!! o_O

I'M BACK TO THIS DELICIOUS BLOODY MARY MIX WITH FRESH KEY LIME JUICE SQUEEZED INTO THE PITCHER... DELICIOUS, IF I DON'T SAY SO MYSELF!!! CHEERS!!!
