No engine ID

I've just bought a new old stock Nice engine from a friend who bought it around 20 years, it doesn't have any engine ID, I had thought these engines that came to the UK back then were ones removed from new bikes and shipped and sold here for the price of complete bikes in Thailand, but with no engine ID I guess my understanding is wrong.
Has anyone come across engines with no ID before?

I don't know for sure but have heard/read here at lilhonda that Honda in the past doesn't not ID warranty motors.

Assuming it is in fact a HONDA factory engine yes they came sans stamped in serial numbers because many counties used the engine number as the registration number, you're supposed to mark the new engine with the old one's number so the documents match .

None of the oem cases ive purchased were ever stamped
