No neutral

I recently did an oil change and decided to take a look at the oil screen. It was pristine. Upon reassembly, it took at least 10 attempts, maybe more attempts to get the clutch setup in correctly. Or so I thought. So now, there is no neutral or clutch adjustment, but she will go through the gears. Does the left side cover need removal?

So, I disassembled the right side case, again. Lined everything up and reassembled, twice. You know how it goes. It’s together. Is it right. Did it go together easily? Maybe not sure. So took it apart and put it together again.

It’s now shifting as it should. But, I have oil bleeding from the clutch adjuster bolt . I have 2 shop manuals and neither show any gaskets or “0” rings. I put an “0” ring on the underside of the external washer, so we’ll see.

Engine has 28ozs of Lucas motorcycle oil.

When you mention 'no neutral... but it will go through the gears', do you mean it wont come out of gear at all and into neutral, ie it always moves when you give it gas? Or it goes into neutral but no neutral indicator light?

Joel, the last disassembly/assembly solved the “ no neutral “ problem. My mistake for the misunderstanding, wife tells me I have lousy communication skills. But to answer you, I had the neutral light, all 4 gears, but no neutral or clutch adjustment. Gear shifting was fierce. Something in the case cover wasn’t lining up.

Old Ct, as usual, dead on advice. Problem solved.

Thank you both

A few months ago, the carb drain “0” ring failed. So I got a carb rebuild kit. Just for 1 tiny “0” ring. Well, I cleaned up and regasketed and new jetted the carb. Finally have a decent idle. I’m a happy boy. Will be moving on to valve adj, points, and timing.

Well, thought I was out of the woods.

Apparently not. At a stop, in any gear, engine idling, apply throttle and get smooth excelleration. But when shifting, regardless of up or down, neutral has disappeared. It’s quite a rough shift.

So, it’s coming apart again, for the umteenth time. The issue must have something to do with the clutch release lever.

I would try a clutch adjustment one more time before pulling the cover. You will know if it worked or changed by holding the shifter all the way up or down. If it wants to move it's time to go in. I would make sure the arm is pointed dead on in the middle of the clutch.

So I’m back into the clutch cover. I take it apart, put it back together, over and over again.

With the cover on, I’m getting 1 to 1 1/2 turns on the clutch adjustment screw before it stops turning in clockwise direction, and gets stiff turning in cc direction, but it will continue to turn. Something that would help me is, how many turns should I have to turn the clutch adjustment screw turn freely. I know this issue can be solved. May take me the rest of my life, but I have time, I think.

I’m getting resistance in both directions totaling about 1 1/2 turns. I think someone here may know the range.

I’m not trying to adjust it. Just making sure everything is in its proper position before setting all the screws
