I went to buy what I thought was a ct70. However once I got it back to my shop I looked at the serial number and it started with an st70. I believe it's a 72? It's been repainted. I'm wondering what the original paint color was? I'm including a picture of the bike and a serial number. It appears the rear tail light is correct. What's not correct?

There is no vintage on head tube.
Vin#ST70-1479541 (Does this look right)

Looks like it was assembled using parts from various bikes. Hk1 frame stickers with k0 "trail 70" badges. K1 taillight. Chinese exhaust. Junk carb. K1 forks, headlight and speedo.

Id guess just the frame is st70. Check by the rear brake switch for any st70 plate/if. Does the frame neck have rivet holes?

St70 should have holes in the fork ears for turn signals.

I see 6 digits in the VIN - 149541 is what it looks like to me. The 5 could easily be a different number, I need a better angle. But a 6 digit VIN on a ST70 that starts with 149 appears to be a ‘76 or 77 from what I’ve been able to find online. What’s the engine VIN? From what I’ve read they aren’t usually anywhere close to the frame VIN. It’s a 3-speed motor, and given how many mixed parts are on the rest of the bike I wouldn’t be surprised if the engine isn’t from a ST70

As suspected. Now what? It would be quite a lot of work/time/money to return this to a stock ST70, and you probably won’t get your money back even after selling all the (genuine Honda only) mismatched parts. Did it come with a title? How about a seat?

I bought it knowing it was a mismatched 72 CT70. It never crossed my mind it could be a ST70. It does have a few issues. It has the common frame rott under the rear fender. I see I can buy a patch kit for that. The engine is missing it ignition cover. The gas tank is missing. Handlebar switches are missing. The seat is included and looks to be correct for a 72 CT70. I bought it sight unseen with no info other than a photo. This photo....

I just started a 74 CT70 restoration. With that project I'm trying to keep as many of the original parts I can. I do not plan on replating anything. If the chrome is really bad I'll probably just powder coat it black or paint it to match the topaz Orange. It's getting a yx140 engine. Which I've already purchased. I have the original engine in a tote sealed up for the next owner. If I was going to do an oem restoration I would start with a much nicer bike. Both of the bikes I own are not worthy. As you pointed out it's too much time and expense to make it worthwhile. All that being said I also look at this as a hobby. I do not plan on making money off of the bikes. However I'm not going to get crazy upside down in them either. I enjoy the tinkering. I live in Ohio junk bikes sell for $1000 on the regular. The Dax is probably worth more in parts then a whole.

Would you mind posting a few close up pics of the left side of the engine, if you don't mind? I'm kind of curious as to exactly what you have for a stator on the engine, it doesn't look like a stock setup
