problems -kick start and leaky carb

I was all set to go on my maiden voyage and ran into problems with my 73 CT 3 speed and it wouldn't start. I had a friend show me the ropes on the engine rebuild. New 88cc kit from TB, new timing chain, new valves, valve seats, guides, gaskets, carb kit with larger jets (62 I think), hi flow oil pump, clutch discs.

My brass inlet in the carb leaks and I'm not sure if its my epoxy repair or the little plug towards the front of the carb thats seaping. I'll have to remove the carb and do a little more repair but this is the least of my worries.

When I was kick starting it, it sound fine except for every 3rd or 4th kick sound a little strange like something wasn't engaged on that down stroke. Then, a few minutes later, every other down stroke it made a high pitched slipping, grinding sound. My gut says its the kick start shaft but I want your opinion on this. When I hear this awful sound I can hear the motor turning at the same time.

Any ideas on what the awful popping, high pitched grinding sound might be?

A scary scenario:eek: If the kickstart arm was slipping on the shaft, you'd notice that it doesn't return properly. It sounds like something didn't go back together properly inside the lower end. Sorry to say this but you may have to split the cases to locate the source of the noise:( . Try spinning the engine over by hand (turning the flywheel) and see if the noise is still there or if any grinding can be felt. If so, consider yourself lucky that the motor didn't start in this condition.

Just a wild guess but it could be a kickstarter part out of place or clutch assembly problem.

I turned the flywheel and it turned freely with no bad sounds at all. With the spark plug out its easier to push the kick start lever down and it is noticible that there may be teeth missing as I pushed down.

The no start problem was a miss adjusted float that wasn't letting the carb bowl fill up. Once I fixed that I was able to bump start it but it started smoking BAD and was dripping oil from the exhaust opening of the head and also out the bolt hole/ bottom of chain guard bolts on.

I guess we'll be cracking open the case. I didn't see the final assembly so I can't comment on how well it went back together. I hope I'm more lucky than stupid. I'm thinking I need a kick start shaft for sure - DrATV has a few different ones - do I get the shaft and all the parts, rings, clips on the same page or wait until the motor is opened up?
