Rattling sound driving me crazy

Hello all, new to the world of little Honda’s. After 20 years I decided to get my 71 CT 70 up and running. It ran when stored. I changed the oil and spark plug and it runs pretty good. The 2 issues I have are a rattling sound and slight hesitation when riding at a steady speed.
I tried adjusting the timing chain according to Workshop manual but that made no difference in the sound. After adjusting it was difficult to start. Not sure if related. I love the little guy and would like to get it properly sorted. Thanks for any help.

You dont say where the rattle sound comes from. That makes it hard to help. I could guess... loose front fender, the cam when your at a specific rpm that goes away when you put it under load, exhaust shields? Can you be more specific? Where / when?

All the CT70's I've had, have had a resonance noise from somewhere depending on RPM. Placing your foot or hand on things, while the noise is there, may help pin point the source. Exhaust guard, headlight assembly, engine guard, ect.

If your T chain can be adjusted ('72K1/HK1-later), then its probably too tight if its causing starting problems. The early K0 models are just spring loaded for tension. If they are making a rattling sound, then its wore out.

I think it is the timing chain, but not sure. It does seem to be coming from the engine. Can riding it with a loose chain cause damage? How difficult is it to put a new timing chain? I also

Timing chains can be easy or hard. It depends on if you have correct tools. Removing the flywheel and stator plate are as difficult as it gets and you need a flywheel puller and something to hold it from turning On a new motor it’s 20 minutes on a crusty motor it could mean drilling out stripped stator plate screws and take a couple hours. You could look at the timing chain tensioner clean it and replace the tip easily enough they do wear out. It may help.
These motors do have a bit of a rattle in the head when everything is good
