That would work. I had another idea about removing the small C-clip that secures the barrels on the shaft and sliding the shaft out. I took a second look at your barrel picture and noticed a relief that is machined on the shaft next to the gear. That precludes sliding the shaft to the right without releasing the clench. The relief is not readily apparent on my odometer when looking at it.

Trying to block up the assembly safely, and whack it with a hammer and punch...by yourself...is difficult. A helper would be worth his (her) wages.

Okay, everything is back together and at zero. I put the assembly in a vise, clamping on the right side and used a small drift to open up the clinchers. I found when re-installing the odometer that one must be careful to not allow the re-clinching to squeeze the gear. That will bind up the odometer. Next time I'm going to take a bit of metal off the area next to the gear before re-assembly.

    Thanks for your help, Kirby.

I just did another. Took me all of ten seconds to get the barrel out. That was negated by a five minute look for the gear I dropped on the floor. Oh well, win some, lose some.

Hard to believe it's the same part...and it works. There is a good supply of old crappy speedo's out there if you have the knack for them. But even old and crappy ones aren't that cheap.

This is just me, but I enjoy bringing stuff back from the dead, if I can. Fellow airplane modelers sometimes looked at me cross-eyed when I decided to fix crashed R/C models that they deemed totaled.

Thanks, but I believe everyone has skill here. It's just in different areas.

Maybe just call it a fascination...definitely a skill, one that most of us can appreciate.
Years from now there will be minibike guys who will list a red69 80mph speedo when they talk about their bikes :)
