Speedometer nut

I have a Honda C70, and during the replacement of the neutral bulb in the speedometer (I disconnected the speedometer cable to better get at the underside) I ended up losing the speedometer nut down inside the steering column.

Does anyone have any tips that will help me get the nut back up through? I've tried a coat hanger up through the bottom with no luck, as well as a magnetic telescopic wand and while it reaches down inside I don't think the nut is being affected by the magnet.

I'm not sure what this situation is either. But, OLD CT's suggestion sounds reasonable :--)

I'd maybe clean out a shop vac, find a hose or straw that will go in, wrap it with a rag tape etc, stick the wrapped end in the vac hose and the other end roots around inside of the fork leg to hopefully suck up the nut...either into the hose or up to the end of the hose so that you can pull it out.

I know how you feel. Once dropped/lost a bolt that went into the frame of a Chevy blazer. Never found it.

Great idea kirrbby. I would like to add that you use an icecream straw, but I think an automotive fuel line sized hose would work best.

Great ideas everyone, I will certainly try the vacuum trick to see if I can remove it.

The nut in question is the one that connects the flanged end of the speedo cable to the speedo itself.

You probably need a new cable that part isn't supposed to come off, and a magnet didn't work because that parts is made from zinc or aluminum.

I'm not sure I agree with you on this, the service manual even indicates to not let the nut go down into the column therefore it must be two pieces from the factory

Haa...that's kinda funny. The manual warns you...don't let the speedo nut fall into the steering stem. They should also tell you how to get it out if it does.

I wasn't reading the service manual as I was taking it apart, guess I should have then I would have known

Looks like you are forced to invert the bike on a piece of carpet or cardboard. Not very hard to do. Like the pic I posted. LOL. Naturally you would want to drain all the gas out if it doesn't have a vent shutoff.

can you wiggle the cable so that the nut falls through the steering column? Once its through, you could put a piece of fishing line through the nut and attach a paperclip or fish hook to the line and pull it back up through the steering column. sometimes you have to go further backwards before you can go forward.

You are pry correct, I reread the post and you are working with a c70. I thought it was a ct70

An air gun + compressor might make fast work of the extraction...kinda like blowing a small object out of a bottle.

After reading this post, that's terrible. Hopefully you extracted the speedo nut. Here is mine, thankfully a wire in the way otherwise I would have the same problem.

Anyhow my problem is reinstalling the speedo. Can't understand the speedo spring reinstalling. Where does it go?

Upside down is appropriate reaction as well . That is quite a cavity . Should return just as fast as it disappeared
