ST90 Muffler Question

I am in the process of refinishing the muffler on my ST90. I notice that there are two straps bolted to the bottom side of the muffler body. Can anyone tell me what these are for? Are these access ports of some kind? My muffler is generally in good condition externally, but I have poured about 2 cups of rust out of the head end. I am curious if there is any reason to remove these straps - or if I should leave well enough alone.

I'd leave well enough alone. I know the access ports that you are referring to and have never needed to see what is on the other side. When I was curious, I quickly became un-curious when I figured out how tight and rusted those bolts were. I would have destroyed the body of an otherwise good muffler to investigate any further.

I agree with Rick. I made the mistake of taking those off of mine out of curiosity and ended up breaking the head off one of the bolts. Then I drilled a hole in that bolt and tried to use an EZ out to remove it only to have part of the EZ out break off flush inside the bolt. Can't get it out now unless I buy that $50 rescue bit to drill through the EZ out or take it to a tap removal place. Now I have a problem that I created and you can avoid.

If I remember correctly the straps you're taking about was a clamp type mount for the heat shield
