For the life of me, I can't figure out why powder coat keeps getting questioned as to being a good option to a paint job. We must have seen dozens of simply beautiful examples of just how gorgeous powder coating can be. Mine's powder coated also, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Could it be that it is an electrical insulator and a star washer does not have enough "tooth" to cut through and make a good electrical ground??

My impression is that powder coat still carries an undeserved reputation of orange peel being an unavoidable fact of life. This is obviously no longer a a given.
Some say that PC can not be wet sanded, stripped or repaired either but obviously wet sanding can be accomplished and the finish can be mechanically removed with sand or bead blasting. As I understand it repairs do involve stripping and repeating the application, but for my money the benefits now seem to outweigh the negatives and percieved or outdated shortcomings of powder coat.

I will admit that a world class painter can likely still get better results and an unlimited color pallette for show quality work, but I don't know anyone with a show bike. Everyone I've met rides them and the durability and cost of PC makes it right for me.

48 hrs after Gary's first post, my K0 was broken down and boxed up. As soon as I get my chain guard and shocks on Monday, it's heading down to TX to be treated to the same CRR treatment.

I believe there have also been concerns of the ct70 body warping during the process because of the heat involved. But, enough people have done it now , I think, to prove that although it may still be a concern, it's possible to do it right.

Honestly . . . its mostly about build level . . . preference and budget.
Dupa has bike that is chrome plated top to bottom . .. if you've ever seen it . . . its just beautiful . . . . its not PC OR PAINT.
YellowBeetle bought a quality paint kit but her painter's prep or application left her $tarting over due to a peeling finish.
My PC job was SO unexpectedly perfect that I am keeping it instead of selling it and trying to source parts that are worthy of going on the frame.
So I think overall that once your have determined your build level preference and budget - whether you go with paint or PC - it really comes down to WHO'S GONNA DO THE WORK?
I can recommend Ayers Garage in communication, prep, work quality and shipping. No surpises. No disappointments. Got more for my $$$ than I was expecting.
That is unusual these days.

Here is my next project. I am doing it for my 9 year old granddaughter. I will be sending it to Ayers Garage for powder coating. Tank and fenders will be hot pink, frame and pretty much everything else will be gloss black. I just wish he could do the fenders. I don't know if any of you have seen his work but man, I am here to tell you this ain't your old powder coating. This guy does some fantastic work. I just checked out a CB400 tank he did and man it is sweet. I didn't know you could do two tone with powder but this guy can do it.:77:

Even with paint you should be bare some metal under grounded bolts, plenty of people on here have the same issue with freshly painted frames, its a pretty weak argument

Exactly motodevo, that goes for the smaller parts like brake pedels and hubs as well.if you send it to someone that isnt familiar with a CT70 or motorcylces in general you will get more powdercoat than you bargained for.Ayers is in tune with motorcycles and CT70's!he masks everything for you!and the frame wont look like a sunkist orange when you get it back.and all bearing surfaces and ground points are masked off.thats very important!

Forgot to post pix of my small parts . . . Wanted to show you all my battery box and seat latch in particular. They are chrome powder coat with a clear powder coat over top and they look like plated parts . . . but they wont rust . . . .

It's actually polished not chrome. He polished the entire thing except for the headlight bucket. It's a one of a kind beauty. Here's a link to the build with pictures. http://lilhonda.com/webboard/f14/project-bling-7398/

He did polish all the aluminum pieces on the bike so they LOOK like chrome tho . . . He is a wonder with the wheel.

IMO, those are the little details that make or break the project.

Did you disassemble the seat latch, or was he able to finish it as one unit; spring and all? I was thinking it was a swaged assembly that couldn't be taken apart, but I've never actually done more than pop the assy off to scrub it real good.

I just looked and Im sure he took it apart, blasted it, coated it in chrome PC, cleared it in clear PC and put it back together.
Sure looks nice against that CRR.

That is a very nice PC ruby red. Ayers looks to be doing top quality work. I don't think I'd go the painting route ever again. The 3 70's in my picture are all powder coated and ridden a lot. The stuff is so durable.

All four of those color matches look really good in the photo Excndez. How long ago did you do them and how did you handle the headlight bucket ?
Did you do the work or have it done?
Any issues with wear, fading, cracking etc. ?
Did you use anything on your finishes (wax etc) or justwash em' ?

Doh! I didn't realize the picture had four in it. The Gold one is painted.
I had a local powder coater do the coating. $150.00 for frame, forks, swingarm, chainguard. I took them rusty/crusty parts and picked them up finished.
No issues on wear. fading, or cracking. I did them at the first of the year.
I haven't waxed them, but a clear coat was put on when they were powder coated.

The Ruby Red bike has an OEM RR headlight bucket. It's a very nice match to the bike.
The Saphire Blue also has an OEM bucket. Pretty close match.
The green one has a chromed OEM bucket. I don't think that teal color is very close to the stock color, but it looks very nice in person.
