The uploaded image is too big

Tiedgen, suddenly I'm not able to post pics from my phone. Says it's too large. I can't find a way to have my phone take smaller pics, and I don't know why I would need to. Worked great before.

I can post them by texting them to myself, then saving to my "gallery" then uploading from there. Lol...I'm no techie.

I've found where I can change my smart phone's camera settings. From 21mp, down to 13mp. Hate to have to do that. I'm not sure if the problem is the mp, or the mb...megabyte?, Or the numbers that it gives me, like a measurement of some sort... 4 numbers, X, then 4 more numbers.

It's easy enough to change the setting on my phone.
The 13mp pic looks pretty dang good to me.
Maybe I just need to stop trying to post 21mp pics. lol
21mp from a skinny little cell phone camera...crazy.
Usually I'm just posting up bs pics that don't need to be great quality anyway.

21mb is a huge photo file to upload. 5mb is enough resolution to print a decent 11 x 14 photo...and printing is where the lack of pixels will really become visible. For viewing on a fair-sized monitor, 1.0mb is high-res, .5mb about the limit of what will fit on a screen, 640 x 480 (a.k.a. "VGA res") is a little bigger than most pix viewed over the web...and ~180-220kb per image. For a smart phone screen, anything over about 40K has to be scrolled. Keep in mind that standard screen res is still 72dpi. IMHO, uploading a 5mb+ photo is just a waste of time and bandwidth/data allowance.

red69 is right, imho, technology has progressed rapidly. Data storage and camera resolution has gotten dirt cheap. 64gb SDXC cards can be had for $20; it wasn't that many years ago when a 60gb HDD was considered decent size...and the "good quality" youtube videos were at 640 x 480 resolution. FYI, 21mb is enough data to support a little over 60 seconds of video at that res & 30fps(!). Maybe we have become spoiled. OTOH, maybe not; the hosting services have gotten censored greedy, of late.

Best suggestion, save size-reduced copies of pix you wish to upload and the full-res originals for your desktop machine.

I looked for a way to...somehow reduce pics in order to be able to post them, and couldn't find it. I think I can just leave my phone's camera set to the lowered res, then change it to the higher resolution for pics that I think need it.
Once I realized...21 megapixels...that sounds like a LOT of megapixels...especially for the reasons I typically post pics.

I would have thought that I website would be able to process pics down to a manageable size automatically.

That's one method. I was thinking of using editing software like potatoshop, which allows you to choose the resolution and maintain the original photo, untouched...via the "save as" option. Adobe is one the leaders in corporate greed, so anything other than "photoshop lite", included with scanners, is cash-sucker. Good news though, GIMP is free and similar enough to photoshop.

I would have thought that I website would be able to process pics down to a manageable size automatically.

Yes, that does happen. However, there are still limits and this is way slower than just uploading files that don't require data reduction.

Back in the 80's my son and I went to a computer show and we were ecstatic to find four MB of memory for our computer @$40/MB. The hard drive on the computer was an ESDI with 160MB of storage.

The 21MP (greater than 4000 x 4000 resolution) is the culprit, not the max image size in MB. The software will resize and upload pics below 20MP, but anything larger can put a strain on the server due to the memory required to process such large files. Please see the FAQ regarding this scenario, issued by the XF development team:

Why can I upload an image, even though it is larger than the maximum file size (KB) permitted?
Uploaded files are first resized based on the maximum physical dimensions (pixels) set in the ACP -> Options -> Attachments: Maximum Attachment Image Dimensions. If the resized image is below the maximum file size (KB) limit, then it will be allowed.
Note that with XenForo 1.2 and above, by default, images of 20 megapixels and over will not be resized; this is to prevent fatal errors due to running out of memory. If the Maximum Attachment Image Dimensions combined total (width x height) is set lower than this limit, images greater than 20 megapixels, or with a dimension larger than that permitted, will be rejected with an error stating The uploaded image is too big. If the Maximum Attachment Image Dimensions combined total (width x height) is set to 0 or greater than 20 megapixels, the image will appear as an attachment without a thumbnail.

If this continues to be a concern as DSLRs and high-end smartphones begin to exceed that 20 megapixel limit, I may need to consider alternatives, such as increasing the PHP server limit. However, I would agree with Bob that using free software to manage the large source files is the preferred alternative.

Kirrbby - I would like to continue researching this.. If you don't mind, can you send me a few examples that failed to upload? Tiedgen@lilhonda.com

Thanks!

I just emailed a couple pics Tiedgen. Sorry I'm slow.

Thanks! Give it another shot at 21MP @kirrbby

I've raised the max allowed resolution to 6k. However, anything larger than 20MP (4k) gets attached as an attachment link, not thumbnail or imbedded image.
